Who are we looking for Metro Mobility is looking for student interns that have graduated college and are working at the graduate level on a masters or higher degree who are interested and excited to gain relevant experience from working for the states largest public transit agency. Candidates should be selfstarters interested in learning about public transit and working for a local government agency dedicated to improving mobility options planning for and offering access to public transit within King County.

Job Duties

Position 1: Research Intern


About the Market Innovation Section: Market Innovation expands the reach of public transportation by breaking barriers and developing new products and services.


The Research Teamworks to ensure that leaders and teams across Metro have the data and research they need for the design implementation and evaluation of our programs and services. Our work is dynamic and reflects the emerging questions and needs related to mobility program and pilot evaluation and customer and employee experiences.


JOB DUTIES:


  • Contribute to the design and implementation of research efforts including literature reviews surveys research & evaluation plans interviews and participant recruitment.

  • Develop research briefs featuring data from Metros surveys qualitative data collection travel trends locationbased data or other research efforts.

  • Support Metro teams to collect data interpret and apply findings to answer key questions design/program short surveys or observational studies.

  • Interpret report and help visualize quantitative data for decisionmaking such as programlevel data dashboards.

THIS INTERNSHIP WOULD BEST MATCH STUDENTS WHO HAVE:

  • Familiarity/proficiencywith data sets and analysis including quantitative and qualitative data.

  • Familiarity with research design principles and approaches.

  • Interest in or knowledge of public transportation social science research approaches customer research or related topics.

  • Experience using Excel GIS Power BI R and Python on SQL.



Position 2: Connecting to Transit Intern

About the Market Innovation Section: Market Innovation expands the reach of public transportation by breaking barriers and developing new products and services.


The Connecting to Transitteamworkstoimprovecustomers access to transit and the larger regional system by creating safe and convenient connections for people to walk roll bike or share rides to transit facilities. Connecting to Transitintegrates a range of mobility options at transit facilities by improving access pathways (i.e. safe routes to transit) and transit facilities (i.e. mobility hubs) to increase nonmotorized and zeroemission access mode share and grow ridership.


JOB DUTIES:


  • Assistwith programs that improve access to multiple mobility options including walking biking rolling shared bikes scooters and ondemand services such as Metro Flex.

  • Data collection analysis reporting and visualization for decisionmaking.

  • Support public and stakeholder engagement for transit rewards initiatives active transportation infrastructure improvement and mobility hub projects.

  • Coordinate collection of bike and vehicle parking data toward improving data quality and analyses.

THIS INTERNSHIP WOULD BEST MATCH STUDENTS WHO HAVE:

  • Professional or academic experience using software for data analysis and/or data visualization (e.g. Excel GIS Power BI and Adobe Creative Suite).

Position 3: Neighborhood Pop Up Research

About the Customer Communications & Services Section: Metros Customer Communications & Services Sectionprovides direct customer support to transit riders by phone and in person.


The Neighborhood PopUp program provides ORCAtransit servicesand supportat events throughout King County.Thisinternposition willconductand analyzeresearch withpartners and customersto alignthelogisticsofwhere whenand how Neighborhood Pop Upeventsareorganized that meettheneeds of the community.


JOB DUTIES:

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of research efforts including surveys research & evaluation plans interviews and participant recruitment.

  • Conduct outreachto existing and potential partners.

  • Work directly with customers to perform research.

  • Evaluate data and provide program recommendations.

THIS INTERNSHIP WOULD BEST MATCH STUDENTS WHO HAVE:

The work for this position will be performed on site and at locations throughout King County. This position will not have a teleworkingcomponent.

  • Strong communication writing and research skills.

Position 4: System Expansion & Integration Policy/Planning Intern

About the Service Development Section: MetrosService Development Sectionis responsible forthe planning and Implementation of transit services schedules facilities regional partnerships and performance management.

The SystemExpansion and Integration teamworks to support transit system growth by developing and implementing policies and plans improving integration between different services and providers and building out Metros RapidRide system.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Support projects related to program evaluation mid and longrange planning Bus Rapid Transit development and transit integration with Sound Transits Link.
  • Conduct research and literature reviews to support plan and policy development.
  • Assemble data collection analysis synthesis and visualization.
  • Write and/or review memos reports and/or presentations.

Position 5: Service Development Strategic Initiatives Intern

About the Service Development Section:Metros Service Development Sectionis responsible forthe planning and implementation of transit services schedules facilities regional partnershipsandperformance management.


This position would support the Zero EmissionsTeam and ServiceDevelopmentManagement Team.The Service Development Management Teamsupports strategic planningacrosswork groupsandrepresentsservice needs inMetros key initiatives.The Zero Emissions Team is a matrixed crossdivisionalteam that is leading Metros transitiontoazeroemissions fleet.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Support planning for enterprisewide strategic initiatives including transitioning routes to zero emissions fleet and route terminal planning.

  • Writing and/or reviewing memos reports and/or presentations.

Position 6: Service Planning Intern

The Service Planning Team worksto design and implement bus route changes to the transit network. Service Planning creatively leads the development of transit and mobility solutions for and with the people of King County to ensure easy reliable and attractive transportation that promotes sociallyequitableand healthy outcomes.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Support service planning projects.
  • Collect data for analysis synthesis and visualization using tools such as Excel ArcGIS Pro PowerBIand/or R.
  • Write and/or review memos reports and/or presentations.
  • Conduct survey analysis and reporting.

Position 7: Mobility Services Intern

About the Contracted Services Section: Metros Contracted Services Sectionprovides customers with information to access the full potential of Metros transportation choices. This sectionis responsible forcommunicating and interfacing with customers and for growing new customers. Contracted Services manages anratesVanpool Metro Flex CommunityVanand Community Access programs.


The Community Transportation Services teamworkstodesign and implement communitybased mobility options to provide rightsized transportation services where traditional fixed route is not the best fit. Programs range from volunteerdriven vehicles for Community Van to local agencyoperatedservicesfor Community Access Transportation and demand response service for Metro Flex.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Support oversight of Metro Flex micro transit program operations.
  • Support field auditing and contract compliance efforts for the Metro Flex service.
  • Research best practices data collection analysis and reporting for Metros ondemand micro transit service.
  • Strengthen communication and collaboration through interaction with King County Metro department staff local jurisdictions and community members.
  • Assist with outreach and marketing of Metro Flex.
  • Experience being part of a transit/transportation street team effort.

Contracted Services manages anratesVanpool Metro Flex CommunityVanand Community Access programs.


The Future of Paratransit teamworks tosupport the development and implementation of thefuture vision forAccess Transportation King County Metros ADA Paratransit Service.Theseefforts are aimed at providing Access riders withahigh levelof service quality and customer experience while providing a safe and efficient service.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Assist with Access Paratransit Metro Flex Community Van and Community Access programs.
  • Assist with alternative services programs for people with disabilities registered for ADA paratransit service such as Metros taxi scrip program.
  • Research best practices data collection analysis and reporting.
  • Strengthen communication and collaboration through interaction with King County Metro department staff area employers and their employees local jurisdictions and transportation management associations.
  • Experience being part of a transit/transportation street team effort.

Position 9: Service Information Graphic Designer Intern

About the Customer Communications & Services Section:Metros Customer Communications & Services Section designs produces and manages customerfacing communications that appear on social media buses in print and online.

The Service Information Teamworks to design produce and distribute customer facing communications commonly seen on the bus at bus stops on printed materials/brochures signage and more.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Assist with the creation of customerfacing transit information and communications.
  • Assist with the twiceannual service change by updating riderinformation materials (predominantly printed products) working closely with the design team.
  • Update and refine timetable route maps to ensure they align with King County Metros brand guidelines and streamline design processes.
  • Lead the redesign of the timetable brochure booklet under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Create and produce bus stop signs and other facility signage.
  • Develop a design accessibility guideline tailored for public transit use to be shared with the Service Information team.
  • Investigate and apply accessibility guidelines to printed products (including maps and timetable booklets) to ensure inclusivity.
  • Design presentation decks to pitch print product improvements to designers and nondesigners.
  • Other duties as assigned.

THIS INTERNSHIP WOULD BEST MATCH STUDENTS WHO HAVE:

  • Demonstrated fluency in key Adobe software: Illustrator InDesign Photoshop and Acrobat is required.
  • Assembled a portfolio showcasing their ability to use the software listed and how they applied them to a variety of projects. (Directions for uploading the portfolio for this position are in the how to apply section.
  • Familiarity with design for accessibility (especially for print) or have a willingness to learn and apply best practices.
  • Proactive skills to initiate tasks and projects without constant supervision. This position is looking for an independent selfstarter who has the ability to identify needs propose solutions and execute plans.
  • Graphic design skills. Applicants do not need to be pursuing a degree in graphic design or working as a graphic designer to apply. We welcome anyone with strong graphic design skills to apply.

Except for the Neighborhood Pop Up Intern position the work associated with these job classifications will be performed through a combination of teleworking complemented with onsite work. The specific mix can be agreed between Intern and supervisor. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. This could include working onsite as needed where desk space and an internet connection is provided. The Neighborhood Pop Up Intern position will be expected to report in person on site at various King County facilities for work.

Interns must reside in Washington state during the period of this internship. Onsite work is most often completed via shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Unless accomplished via the provided ORCA card commuting to onsite work will be at the expense of the employee.
