Salary/Position Classification

  • $90000 Dependent on Experience 9month Contract Exempt
  • 40 hours per week
  • This position requires an oncampus inperson presence on UNDs campus

Purpose of Position

The Department of Energy & Petroleum Engineering at the University of North Dakota (UND) invites applications for a tenuretrack Assistant Professor position. We seek a dynamic and innovative educator and researcher passionate about energy with a strong commitment to advancing both teaching and research excellence.

Energy systems (both conventional and renewable) systems analysis modeling and optimization grid simulation geological storage of carbon dioxide and hydrogen energy materials research and energy storage systems are all of particular interest. The chosen candidate will be expected to mentor or advise graduate students teach graduate courses and create advanced energy engineering courses in their area(s) of specialization.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • The successful applicant will receive a contract with an approximate distribution of 40 teaching 40 research and 20 service effort. UND and the College of Engineering & Mines value diverse perspectives and seek applicants to help students succeed. The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding promise for establishing a sustainable research program that will attract external funds and be aligned with the UND LEADS Strategic Plan.
    • Teaching energy engineering courses at the graduate level. Courses may include: Energy Systems Engineering Energy Storage Systems Energy Systems Optimizations and Engineering System Dynamics. Courses could be oncampus (inperson)/online courses and both termbased and selfpaced asynchronous online courses.
    • Incorporate modern industry practices AI/data analytics and emerging energy technologies into coursework.
    • Advise and mentor both undergraduate and graduate students.
    • Work collaboratively with other EPE Department faculty to achieve consistent and highquality learning environments.
    • Advise and mentor graduate students; direct graduate theses and independent study projects.
    • Establish a solid and productive research program in energy and petroleum engineering including seeking extramural funding to support individual and collaborative projects. Serve as a catalyst for attracting and supporting graduate students in the EPE Program.
    • Encouraged to conduct interdisciplinary research with UNDs Cybersecurity AI and Machine Learning initiatives.

  • Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty staff and students.
  • Ability to engage industry partners and connect course content to the practice of engineering in the field.

Minimum Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in Petroleum Engineering Energy Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Five years of professional experience outside of academia working in an engineering role in the energy industry.
  • Record of peerreviewed publications in highquality journals.
  • Proficiency in the use of relevant software like: Ansys GAMS SAMS HOMER and other energy modeling and conservation software.
  • Knowledge or experience in surface energy infrastructure such as pipelines.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check.

In compliance with federal law all persons hired will be required to verify identityand eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Familiarity with hydrocarbons and alternative subsurface fluids (e.g. hydrogen compressed air natural gas liquids).
  • Experience in developing highimpact experiential learning curricula.
  • Record of involvement in seeking extramural funding.
  • Experience working on multidisciplinary research teams.
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam or earned a license Professional Engineer.
  • Ten years of experience working in an engineering role in the energy industry.
