Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for the daytoday operations of the Analytical Laboratory in the College of Natural & Health Sciences (CNHS) including maintenance and repairs of instrumentation as well as fiscal oversight of all laboratory operations. Hires trains and supervises all laboratory staff in coordination with the Analytical Laboratory Faculty Supervisor and the Supervisor to the Analytical Laboratory Manager (CNHS Dean). Assists faculty and researchers in experimental design sample collection preparation and analysis analytical quality control procedures instrument use and operations and laboratory safety. Contributes to the instructional needs of CNHS as needed and trains oversees schedules coordinates and mentors graduate and undergraduate student users of the laboratory facility. Provides laboratory presentations tours and safety reviews for laboratory courses and those with research components.
Analytical Lab Operations: 35
Oversight of all analytical instruments which includes the DeltaV IRMS Costech Elemental Analyzer Thermo ICP Elementar Vario Isotope Cube Lachat Quikchem 8500 Series 2 and Shimadzu Total Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Analyzer which may involve working with hazardous chemicals.
Works with the Analytical Laboratory technician to oversee maintenance and upkeep of analytical instruments including troubleshooting instruments by phone and email and arranging for instrument service visits from authorized companies.
Analysis of data generated by analytical instruments.
Maintains an inventory of equipment and supplies sufficient to handle the regular operation of all instruments.
Fiscal Responsibilities: 20
Responsible for all purchasing including obtaining quotes as needed seeking necessary permissions initiating Pcard purchases and requisitions and submitting invoices and collecting payments all in accordance with state and university procurement rules regulations policies and procedures.
Work with University Administration to address any fiscal concerns and provide annual updates of the Analytical Laboratory budget to the Dean of CNHS.
Coordinate with appropriate expertise to develop implement and regularly review a business plan for the Analytical Laboratory to ensure fiscal stability and sustainability.
Supervision and Training: 15
Supervises all Analytical Laboratory staff including technicians and student workers. Ensures effective onboarding of all new employees. Provides training instruction guidance schedules and coordination to undergraduate and graduate student assistants and staff.
Contributes to employee performance evaluations for technicians and student assistants.
Instructional Support and Student Mentoring: 25
Provides laboratory presentations tours and safety reviews for laboratory courses and those with research components.
Develops and teaches a directed studies course on operations of analytical instruments and development of analytical methods to undergraduate and graduate students as needed.
Mentors graduate and undergraduate student researchers on directed study or independent study projects as needed.
Seek out new clients or stakeholders as needed to ensure a robust inventory of analytical work for the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications
Considerable working knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the area of analytical chemistry as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts principles and methodologies.
Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with transport of samples within and outside of the state of Hawaii.
Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals.
For supervisory work demonstrated ability to lead subordinates manage work priorities and projects and manage employee relations.
At least two 2 years of instrumental analysis experience in Analytical Chemistry: should include at least one 1 year of supervisory experience and at least one 1 year of fiscal experience.
Demonstrated ability and experience in operating maintaining and repairing analytical instruments.
Knowledge of the principles of data analysis and statistical analysis using Microsoft Excel or similar software packages.
Strong organizational and communication skills and ability to multitask.
Must be able to complete the UH Title IX training within twelve 12 months from date of hire.
Desirable Qualifications
Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in a natural sciences field (e.g. Marine Science Chemistry Geology Environmental Science Biological Science) or a related field.
Experience with the Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS).
Experience with ICPOES.
Water quality experience.
Experience in a research environment or environmental laboratory.
At least two years of work experience in a public institution for higher education.
Prior experience in university procurement.
Knowledge of University of Hawaii administrative and fiscal processes and procedures.
Progressively responsible professional experience in coordinating training in analytical methods.
Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders groups and individuals.
