Pay Rate:$15.00

Job Description:

Academic mentors provide support and guidance to any Baylor student wanting to receive academic support.

For the underprepared students the academic mentor provides a point of contact within the administration; serves as a source of information about the campus university policies and procedures student services and college life; offers guidance in the development of effective study strategies and time management skills; and extends a generous measure of support and encouragement as the student adjusts to college life and academics.

For the student experiencing academic difficulty the academic mentor provides structure and accountability; offers encouragement as well as practical suggestions for improving study skills and time management; and assists the student in monitoring overall academic performance.

An academic mentor works twenty hours/week (including a weekly onehour staff meeting) and meets individually with a case load of approximately 25 students on a regular weekly basis. The mentor maintains a detailed record of assignments concerns referrals and observations of attitude and performance for each student.


Skills required:

An effective academic mentor must have superior interpersonal communication skills both listening and speaking. The mentor must be able not only to empathize with the typical anxieties and frustrations of a student but also to analyze academic problems and suggest strategies for solutions.

Knowledge of Baylor and its undergraduate experience are useful tools for the academic mentor but not required.

  • Ability to prioritize and take initiative
  • Assist with various projects activities and tasks related to business operations
  • Ability to comply with University policies
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance
