Job Title: English Teacher Grades 912Department: AcademicsReports to: Principal Director of Curriculum and Instruction Job SummaryThe English teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment that develops in each student skills of listening speaking reading and writing that are fundamental to effective communication and literate citizenship; that develops an appreciation of good literature of all types; that motivates students to read widely for information and recreation; that develops standards for critical judgment of written and oral communications transmitted by mass media; and that discovers and develops special talents of students in the field of English. English Sequence of Courses:9th: English 910th: English 1011th: American Literature/A.P. English Language and Composition12th: World Literature/A.P. English Literature and CompositionCreative WritingCollege WritingPrimary Roles and ResponsibilitiesPlan and implement rigorous and engaging lesson plans in alignment with Common Core Standards PreAP and AP curriculum.Teach designated course sections lead an advisory group and participate in supervisory duties. Use data effectively to encourage and assess student growth and inform instruction Create a classroom culture built on respect growth and love of learning.Use engaging strategies and cooperative learning techniques. Communicate effectively with parents and families in order to best ensure student successSupport the Catholic Identity of the schoolParticipate in the life of the school including spirit student activities and Christian serviceBe an active member of the Carroll adult learning community including attending all faculty meetingsOther duties as assigned.QualificationsHas teaching experience preferably in an urban high school setting.Is certified to teach in MD DC or VA or is willing to gain certification within three yearsDemonstrates strong writing and communication skills a capacity for organization and followthrough collaboration and flexibility.Has a growth mindset and a commitment to meeting the needs of every student in a diverse population.Is committed to his/her own learning and professional development.Minimum Educational Requirements: Bachelors degree in content areas they wish to teach with a commitment to social justice and working with high school studentsMinimum Experience Requirements:Teaching experience and teacher certification are preferred but the teacher will be required to be certified 3 years from the date of hire. Other Requirements:The ideal candidate must have knowledge of the Catholic faith beliefs and practices along with a thorough understanding of and commitment to the educational mission of the Archdiocese of Washington and the vision of Archbishop Carroll High School.The candidate must possess a positive attitude; good communication skills a collaborative leadership style; and sensitivity to working in a diverse multicultural environment.
