We are currently hiring for a Superintendent Operations to lead the Development team at our Underground Salt Mine in Goderich ON.

Compass Minerals Goderich Salt Mine located 1800 feet under Lake Huron is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics detergents disinfectants and other important products.Goderichis named Canadas Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and KitchenerWaterloo Ontario.

How will you contribute to the team

The Superintendent Operations provides department leadership and execute plans manages their responsibilities in a cost effective safe and environmentally responsible manner. The position will also oversee equipment and personnel to optimize production flows. This position will ensure safety incidents are thoroughly investigated and recommendations implemented. This position manages employee engagement concerns suggestions complaints and grievances. This position ensures that all personnel know and follow the companys policies procedures and standards for work and safety and the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants. This position is responsible for the health and safety of all personnel as well as support and contractor personnel as well as holding supervisors accountable for their performance and strive to increase productivity.

  • Oversee equipment and personnel to optimize production flows.
  • Develop and execute personnel shift schedule and prepare plan for the following shift.
  • Lead all aspects of their assigned departments including unionized employees and specialized teams.
  • Conduct business operations in compliance with the provisions set out under the Collective Agreement.
  • Collaborate with site leadership other Superintendents and their Supervisors to ensure safe operations and maximize production and minimize costs whereby achieving production targets in accordance with the companys stated goals and objectives.
  • Responsible for the management of production shift reports and labour time allocation.
  • Responsible for all personnel (including contractors) equipment tools and materials in their area of responsibility.
  • Prepare and approve mining/maintenance plans allocate work to their teams oversee progress solve problems and take corrective action when required
  • Prepare reports and briefs on equipment safety progress on projects and other matters
  • Lead and participate in meetings and briefings both formal and informal.
  • Work with other departments (including engineering maintenance operations procurement) on equipment performance and operations
  • Monitor safe work procedures and promote high safety and health awareness. Promote and comply with company and legislated policies procedures and standards of work.
  • Be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the team. Ensure safety audits are completed as outlined and scheduled by the EHS department.
  • Ensure appropriate facilities procedures and workforce competence to achieve legal compliance incident prevention and the achievement of tasks in an environmentally sustainable manner.
  • Participate in recruitment and selection of department employees with support from human resources
  • Oversee the development of supervisors and team members providing mentorship coaching and corrective actions in a fair manner that is consistent with company policy.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

what should you bring to the role

  • Requires a bachelors degree or equivalent education and experience and 8 10 years of experience in the mining or heavy industry.
  • Strong interpersonal skills ability to influence and impact in a dynamic multitasking environment with competing priorities and a high level of cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Highly organized structured & detailed approach to planning with a strong commitment to safety.
  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate large volumes of multidiscipline work
  • Strong ability to analyze relevant performance metrics and determine improvement actions
  • Good computer skills with the ability to use integrated management systems word processing presentation and spreadsheet applications.
  • Considerable experience in mine planning optimization operations and strategic planning in large and diversified mine sites with a preference for experience in conventional soft rock operations.
  • High level understanding of all relevant legislation affecting the employment and safety of persons in the mining industry.
  • Experience in managing costs and budgeting
  • Demonstrated application of continuous improvement ideas

what is the work schedule

  • This is a MondayFriday position. Additional hours are expected in order to support the demands required of 24/7 operation.
  • This position is expected to work underground.
