Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education Requirements: Must have 4 years of college level education and bachelors degree or equivalent. (BS/MS joint programs are also acceptable). Must have successfully completed a Graduate Level accredited Physician Assistant Program approved by AMA Board of Approval and Certification of PA programs.

License/Certification/Registration Requirements: Board Certification by the National Commission on Certification of PAs NCCPA certified License as a Physician Assistant in Massachusetts Current DEA and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Licenses 100 hours of CME according to national and state regulations during each 2 year period of employment Current BLS/ACLS certification BWH Professionalism Program (completion within 3 months of date of hire) BWH Procedural Sedation Training (completion within 3 months of date of hire) ABLS certification (completion within 1 year of date of hire)

Experience: Previous burn and/or wound care experience preferred Previous experience in an academic surgical/medical environment preferred Previous experience as a PA preferred Other previous patient care experience may be considered at the discretion of the Burn Director

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

The PA shall demonstrate the following clinical knowledge skills and competencies: Clinical skills and knowledge as well as professionalism of the PA candidate are assessed by the burn attendings under the direction of the Burn Director Dr. Bohdan Pomahac. If a candidate does not pass the competency assessment burn attendings will provide feedback on additional development needs. Reassessment is possible after 6 months of focused development. Competencies are assessed by burn attendings either through direct observation or verbal communication. The attending physician(s) performing the assessment will complete a competency assessment (designed by dept/division). The candidate is responsible to provide example cases which he or she has cared for patients with the most common diagnosis. Physical and mental abilities required: Must be energetic quality driven and have proven ability to be a productive member of a cohesive team of peers dedicated to providing optimum patient care. Must exercise the highest degree of professional judgment under the direct supervision and guidance of a licensed physician. Must maintain a professional attitude towards patients and exercise such mature independent originality in solving problems not covered by existing guidelines within legal limits to meet the needs of the patients. Must maintain a professional attitude towards patients at all times and an excellent and collegial working relationship with other personnel involved in patient care. Must demonstrate understanding of procedures policies and documentation required to ensure compliance with hospital standards of care.
The PA shall demonstrate the following professional knowledge and skills: Proficient with BWH computer systems as needed to independently perform daily tasks such as order entry lab tests and results incident reporting LMR etc. Consistently provide high quality and timely documentation including admission notes progress notes discharge summaries and dictation.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work areas will include the burn/trauma ICU burn/trauma pod operating rooms and the general surgery clinic as well as affiliated areas of patient care (diagnostic units Emergency Department postoperative care unit or any other Hospital areas burn patients visit). Job responsibilities will require significant amounts of standing; moving between rooms and floors; and communicating verbally and in writing with colleagues patients and family members. Patient care responsibilities will require standard precautions and in some cases contact airborne or full barrier precautions.The schedule includes day shifts only. The most frequent weekly schedule will be 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. MondayFriday. Longer weekday shifts 10 or 12 hours) or weekend shifts may occasionally be required to meet patient care or operational needs.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

The PA while not directly overseeing others in the Dept/Division should take on mentoring and leadership responsibilities as follows: Assist in orientation and training of new TBSCC physician assistant hires. Be available for questions and support. Assist in orientation training and mentoring of physician assistant fellows or students when applicable.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:

The PA will be responsible for proper documentation in order to ensure proper reimbursement for consults and procedures.

HOSPITAL WIDE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Works within legal regulatory accreditation and ethical practice standards relevant to the position and as established by BWH/Partners; follows safe practices required for the position; complies with appropriate BWH and Partners policies and procedures; fulfills any training required by BWH and/or Partners as appropriate; brings potential matters of noncompliance to the attention of the supervisor or other appropriate hospital staff.

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The burn center physician assistant (PA) provides direct care to burn patients in the inpatient OR and outpatient settings in concert with the burn director burn attendings acute care surgery fellows surgical residents and members of the trauma/burn ICU and floor teams. The burn PA will focus on continuity of care issues as patients move from the critical care setting to the floor and then to rehab or the outpatient setting. He/she will also be a standard bearer for burn care across these settings. The burn PA will also work with the burn director burn nurse manager trauma and burn program manager and the division administrator on education outreach quality improvement and reverification efforts required to maintain the Brighams status as a Burn Center verified by the American Burn Association (ABA) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical Duties:
The PA should display the following skills and take part in the following tasks: Performs patient admitting histories and physicals; records information accurately in patient record in a timely fashion. Performs routine preoperative and postoperative procedures e.g.: insertion/removal of tubes lines sutures; performs postoperative wound care. Examines and evaluates patients and assists in development of their treatment plan with resident physicians and attending surgeons. Appropriately responds to emergency situations; manages patient issues as they arise to the extent that the PA will obtain and evaluate studies/labs write orders obtain consultations and interpret lab values and xrays with the assistance of the supervising physicians as necessary. Provides age specific care to burn patients from early adolescence through the geriatric ages. Provides teaching to physician trainees medical students and physician assistant students and other health care personnel as appropriate. Stays up to date on the latest literature in burn care practice. Participates in quality improvement efforts and research efforts as directed by the burn director. The PA should also initiate quality improvement and research efforts as appropriate. Participate in photo documentation of burns and uploading photos to the database.
