Our Laboratory Services Department uses state of the art equipment technology and processes to collect and test clinical specimens in order to obtain information about the health of our patients so that our interprofessional teams can diagnose treat and prevent disease.

Under the general direction of our Pathologists our Medical Laboratory Technologist Cytology prepares and examines cellular samples to aid in the diagnosis of diseases particularly cancer.

Employment Status: Casual

Hours of Work: 8 hour day shifts from Monday to Friday subject to change as per operational needs and Article HRH 2 Management Rights.

Hourly Rate: $36.84 $50.24

Position Responsibilities:

• Receiving and processing specimens: Receive label and process cellular samples (e.g. Pap smears fineneedle aspirates and body fluids) for examination.
• Order entry of cytology samples
• Preparing slides: Prepare slides for microscopic examination using techniques such as staining fixation and centrifugation.
• Microscopic examination: Examine cellular samples under a microscope to identify abnormal cell morphology patterns and distributions.
• Cell identification: Identify various cell types including normal and abnormal cells using cytological criteria.
• Abnormality detection: Detect and document cellular abnormalities such as cancer cells precancerous cells and infectious agents.
• Reporting results: Document and report cytology results including descriptions of cellular findings and recommendations for further testing or followup
• Set up apparatus and equipment required for various procedures and maintain equipment.
• Participate in quality control quality assurance activities and proficiency testing to ensure accurate and reliable results.
• Order and maintain inventory and supplies
• Writing maintaining and updating SOP and processes
• Record keeping
• Following guidelines procedures consistent with IQMH requirements
• Following safety protocols: Follow laboratory safety protocols to prevent exposure to biohazardous materials and maintain a safe working environment
• Other duties as assigned and trained in other Laboratory Disciplines

Qualifications:

• Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science required
• Current registration as Medical Laboratory Technologist with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) in Cytology required
• 35 years of recent Cytotechnologist experience preferred
• Proficient skills knowledge and abilities related to the sampling and examination of human cells for purposes of detecting and identifying abnormalities and applying cytomorphologic and quantitative methods in order to recognize a variety of possible malignancies endocrinologic disorders and microbiologic elements.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to work effectively alone or with all team members including coworkers physicians and staff outside the Department of Pathology
• Excellent attendance and discipline free record required
