Job Description

Position Title: OnCall Cook

Corps/Department: Salvation Army Kings Lake Camp

Reports To: Rental and Operations Manager

FLSA Status: OnCall HoursVary; NonExempt

Scope of Position: The Summer Cook is primarily responsible for the Camp Kitchen while camp is in session. The Summer Cook provides nutritious meals in accordance with USDA Summer Food Service Program standards for groups of 75 or more. Serves food efficiently and maintains a pleasant atmosphere in the dining room. Provides supervision and direction to Support Crew when on kitchen duty. Provides management and organization of the kitchen including maintaining an inventory. Assists with food and kitchen supply ordering.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Must be at least 21 years of age with a current drivers license with acceptable driving and criminal history reports.
  2. Prior work experience as as cook for large groups preferred.
  3. Current State of Alaska Food Workers Card required or ability to obtain before the start of camp.
  4. Must perform duties efficiently and demonstrate good judgment.

Essential Functions:

  1. Cooks and serves nutritious meals in accordance with USDA Summer Food Service Program standards for groups of 75 or more.
  2. Provides timely meals in accordance with set schedules.
  3. Ensures all meals are prepared and served in a safe and presentable manner.
  4. Cleans kitchen facilities equipment and appliances in accordance with standard sanitizing practices.
  5. Supervises the Support Crew while on kitchen duty.
  6. Ensures proper safety precautions are taken in the kitchen.
  7. Maintains inventory of kitchen supplies and food in a neat and orderly manner.
  8. Assists Youth Program Specialist with food order when needed.
  9. Actively participates in the spiritual formation of campers and staff.
  10. Ensures campers respect personal property camp equipment and facilities.
  11. Develops and maintains positive working relationships with all staff volunteers and campers.
  12. Ensures campers adhere to camp and Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  13. Ensures and provides supervision and physical/emotional safety for campers and staff.
  14. Maintains a standard of cleanliness in personal grooming and living quarters.
  15. Assists in cleanup of the camp at the end of sessions/summer.
  16. Assists with all other duties as assigned.

Protect the Mission: Must complete the online course for this area and pass the Background Checks required by The Salvation Army for employment.

Driver Requirements: Must be a licensed driver with an acceptable driving history. Must also complete and pass The Salvation Army Driver Safety Course.

Work Environment: Work is performed in a heated and ventilated setting. Noise level is medium when operating motorized kitchen equipment. Occasional daily exposure to walkin cooler and freezer during production periods and food deliveries.

Equipment Used: Employee must be able to operative equipment associated with work such as: natural gas stoves ovens steamers and steam tables toasters freezers mixers coffee machines cutlery and other kitchen tools dishwashers blenders and telephones.

Physical Demands:

  1. Ability to speak sit walk stand bend climb kneel and twist on an intermittent basis; to grasp reach handle finger push or pull objects.
  1. Ability to see and hear at normal ranges with corrective devices if necessary.
  1. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. or more with assistance.
  2. Ability to operate a motor vehicle in daylight darkness or in inclement weather conditions.

Language Skills: Must be able to understand follow and give both written and oral instructions and be comfortable working with diverse individuals in facetoface contact and over the telephone. The employee must be able to use speech and hearing for ordinary and telephone conversation.
