The Emergency Communications Department is responsible for the operation of a countywide consolidated Emergency Communications Center providing 911 and nonemergency call answering and law enforcement fire protection and emergency medical dispatch services for over 30 local Regional County and State Public Safety agencies.

Position Summary
The Communications Dispatcher Trainee receives onthejob training in basic 911 call answering and radio dispatching methods and techniques.

This classification is part of a flexible series. Incumbents appointed at the lower level of the career series may be promoted up to the higher level of the career series subject to their meeting the employment standards for the higher class and a recommendation for their promotion by the appointing authority.

The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used Countywide to fill current and future vacancies on a regular fulltime parttime or temporary basis.

Examples of Duties

  • Receivestraininginanswering .
  • Receives lawfireand medical calls for information received via keyboard for recording ina Computer Aided Dispatch System.
  • Screen information to determine jurisdictionand equipment to be dispatchedand transmits appropriate information by telephone or radio.
  • Dispatcheslawenforcementorotherpersonnelandequipment.
  • Accuratelytypesofinformationonacomputerkeyboardinordertoprocessand/orupdateinformationaccurately.
  • Recordsthenatureandsourceofallincomingandoutgoingradiomessagesasrequired.
  • Monitorspublicsafetyfrequencies.
  • LearnstoemployStandarratingProceduresandPracticesinreceivinganddispatchingdetailsandmessages.
  • Studies and maintains familiarity with the locations and common place names of major roads streets industrial plants county parks and governmental agencies.

Education:
Graduation from High School or possession of a GED certificate and one year of experience involving substantial public contact.

  • Possess a valid Class C Drivers License or be able to provide suitable transportationthat is approved bythe hiring authority.
  • SuccessfullycompleteandpassabackgroundinvestigationincludingPsychologicalandMedicalevaluation.
  • Ability to remain seated for long periods of time. Up to twelve hours per day at a console working at a computer terminal
