Job Description

Join us this summer for a paid internship where you will work on assisting in the development and implementation of program applications to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of safeguards procedures. You will have the following key opportunities:

  • Collaborate with the Safeguards team to identify areas for improvement in the handling and management of nuclear material
  • Participate in the design and engineering of hardware solutions to meet nuclear measurement requirements as specified in DOE Order 474.2A
  • Conduct research and analysis to support the development of innovative safeguards technologies
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to integrate new hardware and software solutions into existing safeguards systems
  • Document and present findings recommendations and progress to INL staff and stakeholders
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety and security protocols

As an intern you will report to the Safeguards group which follows a 9x80 schedule and operates onsite at our Idaho Falls campus. The start date and duration of the internship are flexible and depend on project needs and your availability. Additionally you may be eligible for course credit for this internship if it is approved by your university.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Undergraduate student enrolled full time at an accredited college/university studying Mechanical or Nuclear Engineering
  • A minimum overall 3.0 GPA
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. (including CPT and OPT)

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Undergraduate Internships $26.16/hour $31.47/hour)
  • Masters Internships and PhD Internships PreCandidacy $32.87/hour $35.26/hour)
  • PhD Internships PostCandidacy $35.95/hour $38.41/hour)
  • Eligible interns are provided paid holiday time off and many of our internships offer travel reimbursements.
  • MultiLevel: This is a multilevel posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on degree field and level of education.

INL is a sciencebased applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energys mission in nuclear energy research science and national defense. With more than 5800 scientists researchers and support staff the laboratory works with national and international governments universities and industry partners to discover new science and development technologies that underpin the nations nuclear and renewable energy national security and environmental missions.

INL hosts over 550 undergraduate and graduate students each year to support INLs mission. Opportunities for interns at INL range from nuclear engineering to cybersecurity and include nonscientific positions in several operations and business subject areas.
