About the position
This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with proven experience in building compliance or the construction industry who is ready to play a critical role in how our community develops over time. This position functions as Washoe Countys Building Official charged with ensuring structures in the unincorporated County meet life safety critical codes. Washoe Countys goal is to ensure excellent service to all customers from ownerbuilders to large developers and partner agencies. This position directly supervises Plans Examiners and the Building Inspection Supervisor.The Washoe County Community Services Department (CSD) provides efficient roads parks utilities and development services while supporting a healthy workforce and community. Washoe County CSD exists to serve our customers. We commit to understanding their needs being responsive and proactively seeking solutions that collectively lead to our regions success.
The Building Program ensures buildings/structures are safe by applying nationally recognized codes and County adopted ordinances through our plan check and inspection services. These standards are a vital part of Washoe Countys quality of life and play a key role in maintaining minimum acceptable construction standards and a predictable regulatory environment. Our goal is to assist our customers by providing exceptional public service and to foster a resilient built environment.
Two years of fulltime experience in building plans examination inspection or construction with at least one of those years acting in a supervisory capacity AND a bachelors degree in architecture architectural engineering construction management engineering or a closely related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Candidates who do not possess a bachelors degree but have sufficient work experience to qualify under an equivalent combination of education and experience are highly encouraged to apply.

Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. Effective January 1 2025 the $39.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.
Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.
Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5 until they reach the maximum salary for the classification. Upon promotion current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position OR a promotional calculation whichever is greater.
