This role requires full time on site presence.

CBC North is looking for an experienced journalist with exceptional editing and critical thinking skills to join our digital team as a senior writer.

Assigned to the early web shift this position will report to the senior digital producer. The successful candidate will ensure the accurate and efficient delivery of content to CBCs website. You will write and edit copy craft sharp headlines that engage audiences and package multimedia content to enrich the audience experience.

Your role


You are an editorial leader with keen news judgment high standards and attention to detail. You are comfortable making independent editorial decisions in accordance with the CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices.


You work closely with reporters to develop them as writers and journalists.


You put audience needs at the centre of your work helping to ensure our news content reflects our communities.

Your responsibilities:

  • You take the lead on breaking news in collaboration with the senior digital producer.

  • You write stories from reporters material and Current Affairs interviews as needed.

  • You vet copy edit package and publish stories working with writers to make sure our digital stories meet high editorial standards.

  • You provide coaching and feedback to reporters.

  • You curate our lineup as needed.

  • You monitor news developments to ensure our stories of the day are up to date.

  • You write compelling headlines that drive audience interest and engagement.

  • You chase interviews as needed.

  • You address typo reports and handle corrections and clarifications in consultation with the senior digital producer.

What you bring

  • A minimum of five years of demonstrated experience working in a fastpaced daily multiplatform news environment.

  • Strong journalistic and critical thinking skills including knowledge of and familiarity with CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices as well as the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.

  • Ability to manage and organize large volumes of fastmoving information.

  • Substantial experience in copy editing content for digital and social platforms including factchecking legal vetting and packaging.

  • Knowledge of CBC style is an asset.

  • Superior communication interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in the North and a deep and nuanced understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives and lived experiences.

  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.

  • Possession of a valid drivers licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/RadioCanadas insurance company.

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of five years of journalism experience.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
