We reach more than 73000 individuals and families including almost 13000 youth.CAMBA serves a diverse cross section of New Yorkers from new mothers in Brownsville to job seekers in the Rockaways. More than half of our clients are immigrants and refugees from around the globe. Over 85 of our families are in living in poverty reflecting the challenges faced by nearly 1.7 million New Yorkers today.

CAMBA Legal Services Inc. (CLS)is the legal services arm of CAMBA Inc. CLS provides free civil legal services to lowincome New Yorkers in the areas of consumer law foreclosure prevention immigration housing law and domestic violence assistance. The Housing Unit preserves affordable housing for Brooklyn and Staten Islands lowincome communities through representation of lowincome individuals and families throughout Brooklyn and Staten Island who are facing threats of eviction harassment or issues of habitability.

Position: Housing Summer Intern

Reports To: Supervising Attorney

Location: 20 Snyder Avenue Brooklyn NY 11226/Hybrid Remote

What The Housing Summer Intern Does:

  • Conduct client intake and assessment of client cases.
  • Interview clients in preparation for litigation and/or court proceedings.
  • Prepare legal documents conduct legal research etc. in landlord/tenant proceedings.
  • Gather evidence to formulate defense or to institute legal action on clients behalf.
  • Develop legal strategies arguments and testimonies in preparation for presentation of cases for trials hearings and oral arguments.
  • Draft and file motions briefs pleadings legal memos and appeals.
  • Record case notes and outcomes in a timely fashion in CLSs data base.
  • Communicate effectively with clients staff peers and supervisors.
  • Manage own time effectively and coordinate program activities to maximize efforts of the team.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive client files including up to date case note documentation.
  • Research and analyze statutes judicial decisions legal articles legal codes etc.
  • Research and interpret laws rulings and regulations as they relate to clients cases.
  • Review written documentation related to clients cases for accuracy completeness and clarity (i.e. court documents case files etc..
  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience Required:

  • Bachelors Degree
  • First or secondyear law student 1L or 2L)

Other Requirements:

  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest work and economic justice
  • Excellent written & verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Outlook Word and Excel.
  • Strong Computer literacy in other Microsoft Office Suite products.
  • Demonstrated commitment to nonprofit work and/or economic justice
  • Excellent research and writing skills

Compensation: $0
When salary ranges are listed the range would represent the low and high end for the applicable position & program. The salary offered would be based on various factors unique to each program and candidate.This includes but is not limited to experience education budget and/or program size internal equity skills and other factors that may be required for the position and organization.

Status: Temporary Fulltime 35 hours per week) 11 to 12 Week Program) (MondayFriday 9AM5PM)
