Life Skills Teacher 1.0 FTE)
Life Skills is a small supportive class for student with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities and/or autism. Students may exhibit challenging behaviours and complex learning needs. Goals of the program include developing communication skills or communication systems for nonverbal students providing life skills training (e.g. selfhelp personal care) functional academic skills development improving behavioural and social skills working within community recreation facilities to promote physical fitness providing work experience where appropriate and providing transition to postsecondary options. In addition to the teacher the program is staffed with SSAs (the number of support staff is dependent on the students needs). The successful candidate will have a Diploma in Special Education or equivalent course work in addition to experience in the following: Working with students with developmental disabilities and/or autism. Developing implementing and evaluating individualized education plans (IEPs). Using Functional Behaviour Assessments to develop positive behaviour support plans. Liaising with parents school and district staff. Working collaboratively as part of a team. Liaising with a multidisciplinary team (e.g. doctors physiotherapists occupational therapists nurses social workers).
