Food Bank Associate Grant Funded Term (Summer)

TITLE:Food Bank Associate

DURATION: Summer Term(May August)

LOCATION: 661 Main Street

DEPARTMENT:Food & Nutrition

REPORTS TO:Manager Food & Nutrition

WAGE: $18 per hour

HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours a week


ABOUT THE COMPANY
Main Street Project Inc. (MSP) is a notforprofit charitable community health centre with a mandate to address the social determinants of health which give rise to issues of addiction physical and mental health issues and homelessness. MSP uses housingfirst and harm reduction principles in the provision of a safe respectful and accessible place for individuals who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness in the community.

MSP Food Bank and Essentials Market is a no cost retailstyle food market for our community members. The market simulates a retail experience offering a comfortable and welcoming environment where people can choose what works for them instead of receiving a handout. Our focus will be on providing an inclusive and respectful shopping experience ensuring that our community members live with dignity as we help set them up for success on their path forward.


POSITION SUMMARY
The Food Bank Associate assists with daytoday operations of the Main Street Project food and nutrition program to increase access to nutritious food for those living in our community. They help coordinate food and nutrition activities including providing food to the community MSPs Food Bank and Essentials Market donation drives and functions/events.

The Associate also helps with accepting and organizing food donations to ensure a high standard of quality. They maintain food inventory including shipping receiving food setup and distribution and ensure sanitation and food safety standards are met in compliance with public health guidelines.

Additionally the Associate assists with managing food donations including packaging storage and labeling requirements to ensure food safety. They determine how food will be transported throughout the Agency and how it will be picked up.
The Associate helps with the setup merchandising and operation of the weekly food bank and assists the community with their weekly shopping. They also provide support with donation drives for food bottled water etc.


JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Food Bank and Essentials Market Shop Floor
  • Acknowledge guests and assist with their shopping need
  • Maintaining neat and orderly shop floor
  • Ensure that the shop is clean restocked and properly organized
  • Replenish product


Production Area
  • Receive assist and thank guests for their donations
  • The ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. to lift and move boxes and bags of donated items
  • Sort through donations and evaluate items for quality and condition
  • Place items for distribution to the appropriate area on the shop floor
  • Prepare food hampers for the MSP casework team or other community service partners
  • Assist with managing volunteer groups with sorting and distribution
  • Assist with donation drives

SKILLS & QUALIFICATONS
  • Approachable with good interaction/people skills
  • Good written and oral English (French where required)
  • Eye for detail
  • Dependability
  • Ability to push pull bend crouch twist lift and carry
  • Possess the ability to learn sorting procedures and product display guidelines
  • Must be resident in and eligible to work in Canada


ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
  • Based on the funding requirements for this position applicants must be between 18 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
  • Be a Canadian citizen permanent resident or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the immigration and refugee act for the duration of the employment. (Social Insurance Numbers that start with 900 will not qualify under this funding)
  • Have a valid social insurance number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
