Position Description and Qualifications

Job Posting Summary:

Ensworth School seeks a dynamic and experienced music educator to direct its Grades 58 Instrumental Music Program and teach across the middle school music curriculum. The ideal candidate will have expertise teaching and performing with a variety of instruments including brass woodwinds strings piano and guitar as well as experience in musicology theory and technology. Responsibilities include leading ensembles supporting arts events and contributing to the middle school musical. A talented multiinstrumentalist with at least three years of teaching experience the candidate should inspire students through engaging genrediverse programming (modern and traditional) while fostering strong relationships with students and colleagues. Above all the successful applicant will have demonstrated a commitment to the principles expressed in the Ensworth Vision Statement executing their role with moral integrity intellectual vitality discipline compassion humor and joy.

Interested candidates with prior leadership experience may also be considered for the role of Middle School Arts Department Chair and Red Gables Director of Performing Arts. In this capacity he or she will provide leadership and oversight of all Red Gables arts programming including event planning faculty support curriculum development and interdisciplinary collaboration. Responsibilities include coordinating with the K12 Arts Director Division Head and other department chairs to ensure high standards effective communication and alignment with Ensworths mission. The department chair role also involves managing departmental budgets professional development and faculty growth while overseeing performing arts events crosscampus initiatives and community engagement. As a leader the candidate would promote a collaborative and innovative vision for the arts represent the department in schoolwide meetings and work with the administration to address operational needs ensuring the arts remain an integral part of Ensworths dynamic wholechild educational experience.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Abides by Ensworths Employee Handbook and Code of Conduct
  • Commits to the ideals expressed in Ensworths Mission Statement Vision Statement and Diversity Equity and Inclusion Statement
  • Adheres to the Essential Expectations of an Ensworth Faculty Staff or Administrator
  • Teach across Ensworths music curriculum and serve as an advisor in the schools advisory program.
  • Direct and expand instrumental ensembles for grades 58 including Rock Band Jazz Band and other electives.
  • Prepare ensembles for major school events including Arts Night Grandparents Day Holiday Concerts and Spring Band Concerts.
  • Maintain and oversee the inventory and maintenance of band instruments and equipment.
  • Support student participation in district regional and national music events including preparation and travel as needed.
  • Infuses curriculum with current music education technology and creative music software.
  • Collaborate with high school music faculty on crossover events and placement auditions.
  • Contribute to scaffolded K12 arts learning and the Red Gables musical production.
  • Assist with equipment setup and breakdown for performances and events in Frist Hall.
  • Assess student progress communicate performance updates and collaborate with the Arts Department Chair.
  • Work collaboratively with the arts team demonstrating a proactive and teamoriented work ethic.
  • Serve as a visible approachable and professional community representative.
  • Integrates technology to support curricular aims and help students effectively achieve their goals
  • Provides student support and supervision both inside and outside the classroom
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree in Music Education and/or Music; Masters Degree preferred
  • Minimum of 35 years of music education experience in a classroom setting
  • Must be a highly skilled musician and artist with a presentable portfolio of work and a demonstrated record of working with students in an educational environment
  • Advanced understanding and ability to use computers and technology including Microsoft Excel Word PowerPoint basic office equipment music software such as MuseScore GarageBand Logic X and basic live event audio engineering.
  • Welldeveloped interpersonal written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with all constituents in a school environment including students coworkers parents alumnae volunteers and the public
  • Possesses a positive team mentality with excellent problemsolving multitasking and organization skills
  • Professional and efficient in their ability to work independently while also able to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external partners
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously with differing deadlines
  • A high degree of accuracy and superior attention to detail
  • Must successfully complete background screening and verification
  • Continued Education Programs (as required by Grade Level and/or position) Periodically participate in different training sessions identified by you the employee and/or Divisional Leadership/Supervisor with the goal of keeping our teachers and staff up to date with current teaching methods practices and any new knowledge in their respective field. Dependent on the program such training may need to take place outside of normal working hours and/or in the summer months.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Regularly works in standard performing arts theater office and classroom conditions
  • Works at a computer screen for extended periods of time; ability to observe students from various distances
  • Frequently required to move around the theater/office/classroom; works at a desk for extended periods of time; occasionally moves around campus and arts facility
  • Ability to occasionally move items weighing up to 50 lbs. across the gallery theater and arts classrooms
  • Occasionally works in a stressful performance environment effectively dealing with a wide variety of challenges deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts; stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions
  • Ensworth requires employees to be physically present on campus with limited exceptions that are at the sole discretion of the School. Under extraordinary circumstances some or all of the workforce may be required to move to a remote working environment. Additionally certain individuals may also be approved for limited remote work based on the nature of the job description specific circumstances and only with written prior approval by a direct supervisor.
