Job Description

Position Summary
Reporting to the IU Vice President for Research the Associate Vice President AVP for Research Development is responsible for developing and managing relationships services and programs that catalyze the research goals of Indiana University and its faculty. This AVP position is a new consolidated position that has responsibility and scope covering all IU campuses. This is an open national and rolling search. Research Development at Indiana University includes research philanthropy and external partnerships proposal support strategic nominations and limited submissions faculty research and leadership development DEI in research activities internal seed funding programs and innovation and commercialization initiatives to create a single front door for faculty and administrative PIs to access research relationships services and programs that currently reside in departments schools campuses and at the university. The AVP for Research Development is a member of the Vice President for Researchs senior leadership cabinet and complements and synergizes with other AVPs including those for Research Administration Innovation and Commercialization Business Partnerships and Campus Research. The Organization The Research Development organizational structure including currently about 40 FTE personnel includes these organizational divisions: General Proposal Support. This division leads training workshops templates resources webinars ondemand content and support broader impact workshops etc. Strategic Nominations and Limited Submissions. This division leads proposal support for strategic complex large centerlevel submissions (team development proposal management grant writing and narrative development and editing budget construction graphic design external review/evaluation planning ORA integrated handoff etc.; focused effort on limited submissions that are strategic Faculty Research and Leadership Development. This division leads DEI activities career planning recognition and rewards processes mentorship program training programs for PIs and lab directors etc. Internal Seed Funding Programs. This division leads all internal fellowship grant bridge production project equipment etc. funding program coordination management and assessment Federal Agency Research Relations. This division is IUs point of contact with multiple federal funding agencies to foster and develop strong relationships and opportunities for IU. Opportunities for the AVP for Research Development Because Research Development is a new unit within the Research Office the new AVP will have a unique opportunity to: Build a catalytic ecosystem of research development at IU The AVP for Research Development will have the opportunity to grow a catalytic ecosystem that brings together the many talented staff members and valuable resources in existing but sometimes disconnected units through formal and informal reporting lines in departments schools campuses and at the university. The full integration of these functions allows Research Development to support the broad research needs of IUs faculty and administrative units to develop and implement strategic programs that best utilize available but limited resources. Establish an integrated culture of support that places researchers at the center of decisionmaking The fundamental mission of Research Development is to support faculty researchers. Each administrative unit within Research Development will work independently and in coordination with all others to ensure a seamless delivery of services that prioritizes the needs of faculty researchers scholars and artists. Administrative officers and staff members that seek external sponsorship for programs are another key group of PIs. Focus new resources on strategic priorities that drive research productivity The AVP for Research Development will cultivate and develop a concierge model of support in strategic areas to top research centers and institutes and for our most productive and impactful researchers and scholars. The AVP for Research Development will work with senior faculty strategic advisors to support research productivity goals for scholarship external funding and impact. The AVP for Research Development will coordinate the processes to connect the right faculty for the right research opportunities. Develop an integrated research philanthropy and external partnerships initiative The AVP for Research Development has the opportunity to partner with other key AVPs to execute an effective and coordinated model to pursue targeted funding sources or multiple funding sources simultaneously. Although not limited to these the AVP for Research Development should work closely with the AVPs for Research Administration Innovation and Commercialization Business Partnerships and Campus Research in the pursuit of federal agency funding foundation and philanthropic funding and funding from industry. Indiana University is fortunate to have decades of established successful partnerships with external partnerscorporations nonprofits higher education institutions governmental and othersand continuing to build on these partnerships in relation to the research mission of IU is a high priority. Elevate the stature of innovation communityengaged research and research impact Integrate innovation entrepreneurship state and communityengaged and impactful research and scholarship into strategic priorities for research including in the definition of goals and recognition and reward structures. Identify resources and policies organizational and other changes necessary to integrate these values into the research ecosystem. Define metrics to measure research development responsiveness and success and evaluate and deploy necessary systems to support research development activities Working with the AVPs the AVP for Research Development should develop qualitative and quantitative facultyresponsive metrics of success to measure the effectiveness of our various RD efforts and programs. The AVP should regularly evaluate that facultyfacing systems are functioning as efficiently as possible and plan for changes and improvements where needed.
