Job Description

English/Language Arts Literacy Coach

10.5 month position

The Montgomery County School Board Virginia is now accepting applications for an English/Language Arts Literacy Coach position that is availablein the division for SY.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the school principal(s) the ELA Literacy Coach provides support to English Language Arts teachers in the development of highquality/effective ELA Tier I instruction in grades 612 as well as to Reading Specialist teachers in specific Tier II and III instruction and intervention strategies to work with students reading two or more years below grade level.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Curriculum Related:

  • Participates in GradeLevel Division Curriculum Team Work Sessions for grades 612
  • Participates in updating the gradelevel pacing guides on a yearly basis and using the pacing guide to assist classroom teachers in planning for standards instruction based on the division calendar
  • Assists teachers with the selection of lessons/materials that align to the standardsbased unit themes
  • Prepares the Summer Academy intervention curriculum based on identified needs of students attending

Assessment Related:

  • Reviews edits and revises EndofUnit Assessments to ensure alignment with the SOL
  • Assists in the administration of the VDOE SOL Reading/Writing assessments
  • Assists in planning intervention schedules for expedited SOL retakes for ELA courses
  • Gathers data from all common and state assessments sorting and placing into individual ELA teacher data sheets as needed
  • Researches compiles and monitors the selection of intervention strategies for Tier II and III services
  • Collects and provides userfriendly reading/writing intervention data for literacy lab teachers
  • Assists in assessing students progress in Literacy Lab at the beginning/middle/end of the school year (i.e. PAST LETRS Phonics and Word Reading Survey Basic/Advanced Spelling assessment etc.
  • Assists in the building of literacy lab sections based on prior years reading intervention data
  • Participates in placement meetings involving students needing reading/writing intervention supports
  • Participates in Professional Learning Community/data meetings to support teacher knowledge and use of diagnostic formative and summative data

Instruction Related:

  • Serves as an instructional coach to teachers as it relates to teaching reading/writing
  • Assists ELA teachers with unit/lesson planning
  • Assists coteacher teams with planning and delivery of instruction
  • Meets with and advises specific teachers who need additional support in planning effective instruction
  • Plans and models lesson/strategies for classroom/special education teachers
  • Develops a solid understanding of resources/materials available though the ELA curriculum for teacher use in developing unit/lesson plans
  • Identifies and creates (if necessary) targeted intervention strategies to support instruction during I/E blocks
  • Assists classroom teachers with the development of student personalized reading plans
  • Keeps record of weekly collaboration meetings with classroom teachers showing student data growth and interventions

Professional Development:

  • Using student data assists teachers in identifying the learning needs of students and develops plans and facilitates professional learning opportunities for teachers
  • Identifies and provides learning opportunity offerings for teachers
  • Explores extension activities that can be used with G/T students and assists teachers in scaffolding learning experiences
  • Explores scaffolding opportunities for special education and English Language Learning and assists teachers with implementing support structures for identified students
  • Seeks out and participates in coaching experiences that will enhance knowledge of working with adult learners

DivisionFocused Related:

  • Provides support to all newly contracted ELA teachers as they transition into MCPS aligned teaching practices
  • Assists the Administrator of English Language Arts in working with initiatives required by the state of school division to meet state expectations (i.e. Virginia Literacy Act evidencebased curriculum book/novel inventories divisionliteracy plan goals/activities grading practices etc.
  • Assist principals in gathering and inputting data into school datasheets as related to the schools required yearly school improvement plan
  • Assists with transition issues related to elementary students moving to the middle school and middle school students moving into the high school
  • Discharges all responsibilities and fulfills all obligations as specified in contract policies and guidelines of the Montgomery County School Board

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in secondary education and/or English/Language Arts 612
  • Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction English or Reading Specialist
  • Strong written verbal presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Five or more years of experience as a classroom teacher
  • Experience in curriculum development and developing unit/lesson plans which align with evidencebased reading instruction research
  • Experience in providing explicit and systematic instruction within the delivery of Tier I instruction to strengthen students reading and writing skills
  • Experience in providing specific Tier II and III intervention strategies to students who are reading below grade level
  • Experience in leading teams in analyzing student performance data and identifying instructional strengths and needs of students in order to plan out teambased evidencebased strategies to address the learning gaps of various student groups
  • Experience or working familiarity with Google Drive for instruction collaboration and coursework
  • Experience in utilizing technology in an instructional environment
  • One or more years in a leadership role (i.e. Department Chair mentoring/supporting new teachers coaching colleagues schoolbased team leader for improvement etc.
  • Functional knowledge of commonly used office equipment and workflow technologies
  • Ability to maintain an unquestionable degree of confidentiality
  • Ability to multitask work with interruptions and work under pressure
  • Ability to be dependable and punctual

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Reading Specialist/Developmental Reading endorsement
  • Completion of training in the scienceofreading (LETRS)

FLSA Status: Exempt

SALARY: $55470.14 $84058.09 annually; with benefits; commensurate with experience and prorated to start date
