GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Department of Agriculture Analytical Services Laboratory is searching for a Laboratory Scientist I with knowledge and experience in microbiology. This position will perform analysis for the detection and isolation of pathogenic bacteria in meat water and dairy samples. This environmental laboratory performs a wide range of analyses including PCR and traditional cultural methods. The laboratory is ISO/IEC 17025 USDA FDA and EPA accredited uses standard analytical methods and provides a valuable service to Wyoming and regional residents.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.- Performs routine and nonroutine analytical analyses in the microbiology laboratory on a variety of food samples including but not limited to meat and dairy samples.
- Operates highly complex analyzers and performs manual tests following detailed instructions using safe good laboratory practice.
- Crosstrains into the water chemistry laboratory to perform analyses on a variety of environmental samples such as water or food.
- Follows standard analytical procedures while handling hazardous or infectious materials.
- Develops maintains and revises laboratory documents or policies.
- Develops new or revised test methods standard operating procedures and laboratory policies.
- Works independently under minimal supervision.
- Responds to requests for information from the public and departmental personnel.
Qualifications
PREFERENCES:
Preference may be given to the applicant with a degree in microbiology.
KNOWLEDGE:- Knowledge of basic principles of microbiology and theories.
- Knowledge of laboratory research principles and recording of daily work activities.
- Knowledge of highly technical laboratory analyzers such as thermocyclers and PCR principles.
- Knowledge of laboratory quality control assurance practices ISO accreditation and Hazardous material control.
- Knowledge and ability to think critically and accurately to process complex data.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education:Bachelors Degree (typically in Science)Experience:02 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Laboratory AssistantOREducation & ExperienceSubstitution:35 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Laboratory AssistantCertificates Licenses Registrations:NoneNecessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:- Works closely with hazardous chemicals and pathogenic bacteria.
- Works with environmental samples.
- Some tasks may be repetitive.
- Occasional exposure to loud noises.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
