Job Description

The Program

Taproot Community Support Services (formerly WJS Canada) works to improve the lives of persons in their communities through a variety of programs and services.

Taproot Community Support Services works to improve the lives of persons with developmental disabilities by encouraging them to be self directed and to make their own decisions. In order to build social communication skills and life skills our team members offer support to encourage and enable independence self expression and creativity in the persons we serve. Behavioral and healthrelated support is tailored to their individual needs.

The Position

The Disability Services Worker (DSW) under supervision of their supervisor facilitates and monitors education and development programs for purposes of providing individuals in service with physical behavioural emotional and social supports/supervision in residence and in the community. DSWs develop relationships and act as a liaison with the community family members guardians and employers. This position reports to the Team Leader.

One 1 permanent fulltime position that will work 30 hours per week.
Two week rotation working alternate weekends

In Your Role You Will

Support individuals with household chores life skills personal hygiene (if needed).
Provide supports as per the individuals care plan
Provide immediate support in crisis situations and use deescalation techniques to deal with behaviours
Administer medication first aid if/when necessary.
Use computer program to write objective daily reports and document notes & observations regarding the client
A complete and detailed list of key responsibilities can be available at time of interview.

*** Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a current (dated within 6 months of hiring date) Criminal Record Check and Ministry Check. These checks can take up to 6 weeks to obtain please ensure you prepare accordingly.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess

MANDATORY Physically able to do lifts and transfers for low weight bearing individuals
Candidate must be physically able to participate in recreation activities such as swimming walking basketball etc. to support personsserved desire to be physically active
Minimum Grade 12 or Diploma/Degree in Disabilities Studies Social Work Human Services Special Education Recreation or equivalent
One 1 year experience working with persons with developmental disabilities is preferred
MANDATORY A valid Class 5 Driver License with acceptable driving abstract and reliable vehicle
A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right / responsibility to define and pursue their life choices and pursue active participation and involvement in the community.
Skills in assisting individuals in anger management daily living selfhelp etc.

ALSO helpful but will train if needed:
First Aid/CPR Certification
Crisis Prevention Intervention Medication Administration Abuse Protocol Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies Foundations and Disabilities Training
Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety as appropriate.
