Job Description

This 12month fulltime nonteaching nontenure track oncampus position proactively enhances the student experience by providing focused commitment to students success in their academic majors. The professional advisor will report to the Dean of the College of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences and will coordinate activities with appropriate department and program chairs.

Advises oncampus and online undergraduate students enrolled at FHSU communicating information procedures and academic requirements related to the colleges programs and majors; evaluating students specific academic situations; and working with students to set reasonable academic goals aimed at timely completion of their chosen degree programs. Utilizes FHSU systems to prepare for advising of students. Interacts with students using various technologies and inperson meetings. Works with the Dean and Assistant Dean of the College of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences on daytoday operations and academic issues and with the Director of Academic Advising and Career Exploration for training and development.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Persons in this position must possess advising communication and situationmanagement skills as they will be required to interact with students in a professional manner. They must be able to influence students to move successfully and efficiently through their academic requirements anticipating and meeting deadlines for registration financial aid etc. They will display a strong work ethic and will not hesitate to take ownership of problems and situations in which reasonable assistance may be rendered to students. Success in this position will require a strong internal sense of urgency and the ability to be a self starter. A welldeveloped ability to organize and effectively prioritize work is essential.

Job Duties:

  • Assists students with registration and provides guidance in course selection consistent with students degree requirements interests and abilities;
  • Proactively communicates with assigned advisees regarding registration procedures academic policies and other general academic information;
  • Assesses students stages of academic development and assists students in setting realistic and attainable academic goals with the primary duty being course registration each semester;
  • Advises students on academic issues and identifies the educational options appropriate for individual students as their situations dictate;
  • Works collaboratively with units such as the Transfer and Military Center Academic Advising and Career Exploration and the Registrars Office regarding training development and degree requirements;
  • Identifies available options for students to satisfy degree requirements in a timely manner and connects students with studentsupport services;
  • Proactively and systematically engages students to assist them in meeting deadlines in order to help them progress efficiently and effectively through the requirements of their degrees;
  • Monitors academic progress of each student assigned to them. With the aid of the earlyalert system analyzes progress reports from faculty and promotes satisfactory academic progress toward degree completion. With faculty identifies and discusses current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g. study skills tutoring needed writing issues etc. and refers students to appropriate support services;
  • Maintains student files and records; documents all pertinent student information; updates student information systemincluding advisor notesat regular intervals after each contact with a student and as needed in special circumstances;
  • Makes students aware of relevant Fort Hays State University policies and procedures;
  • Reviews midterm and endofsemester grades and conducts unscheduled grade audits as individual situations require;
  • Assists students as needed in the completion of registration adds drops etc.;
  • Identifies options for students to satisfy specific degree requirements and evaluates and makes recommendations on desirable or needed adjustments to students academic programs;
  • Utilizes the enrollment system to monitor advisees status and progress;
  • Follows up with students who have not registered by the start of each semester approaches;
  • Participates in the professional advising community at FHSU;
  • Participates in training and development opportunities to enhance advising skills and abilities;
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualification:

  • Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Appointment Date: Start date to be determined after acceptance of an offer and completion of criminal background check.

Base Salary Information:

Bachelors degree $36000 per year 12month contract)

Masters degree or higher $39000 per year 12month contract)
