Job Description

General Function: $24.43 $31.76 Hourly

Under the general supervision of the Director of Airfield and Grounds Maintenance Airfield Manager and the Airfield Supervisor performs a variety of maintenance activities to repair and maintain pavements grounds utilities gates and fencing on and around the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport and associated facilities. Operates and maintains equipment unique to the airport to keep runways taxiways and roads free of snow and ice.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Operates a variety of equipment such as large tractors zeroturn mowers chainsaws skid steer loaders with various attachments asphalt rollers concrete saws sealers and other equipment in maintenance of airport pavements as well as vehicles and machines involved in airport pavement marking and related equipment to maintain Authority owned property.

Operates vehicles and equipment on controlled surfaces and communicates via radio with FAA control tower in accordance with FAR Part 139.

Operates heavy equipment such as backhoes rubbertired frontend loaders dump trucks and large snow removal equipment (exceeding 26000 lbs. on airfield.

Performs routine maintenance on Authority owned vehicles and equipment such as oil and fluid checks oil changes and lubricating and performs equipment safety inspections. Cleans vehicle cabs and bodies/beds.

Operates powered hand tools.

Maintains/repairs airside and landside pavements and drainage systems.

Installs and repairs chain link and other type fences and gates.

Performs garbage and debris cleanup on Authority owned properties and maintains shop areas and equipment in a safe clean and orderly fashion.

Assist other departments with special projects or assignments.

Other duties as assigned.

Employment Qualifications:

Must obtain and maintain airfield driving privileges and Air Traffic Control communications endorsement within 6 months of employment.

Must have the ability to access and operate all equipment and vehicles.

Must have safe work and driving habits.

Ability to act with integrity.

Ability to effectively communicate over a twoway radio.

Must have an acceptable and reliable means for being contacted during offduty hours. Subject to emergency callin requirements.

Must pass criminal history background check and maintain eligibility for a security access badge in accordance with the Airport Security Plan

Ability to work independently and exercise sound independent judgement.

Education/Experience:

High School Diploma or GED

A Minimum of 3 years experience in the operations of gasoline and dieselpowered vehicles.

Experience in the operation of concrete saws chainsaws and other hand tools.

Demonstrated working knowledge of general construction practices used in installing/repairing concrete.

Demonstrated experience operating skid steer loaders frontend loaders backhoes and mowers.

The Airfield Maintenance Technician will work as part of a team to maintain the grounds to ensure the safety and comfort of Authority employees tenants visitors and the traveling public. Duties may vary according to job assignment. This position is a standard 1st shift 7:00AM3:30PM).

Physical/Environmental Requirements:

This position is primarily performed in an outdoor environment in a variety of climates. Involves exposure to noise vibrations chemical and other contaminants moving mechanical hazards and extremes of temperature and weather conditions. Must have sufficient visual acuity with or without corrective lenses; sufficient auditory ability with or without audio logical devices; able to tolerate exposure to noise levels up to 120 decibels; capable of being on ones feet for extended periods of time and lifting 50 pounds unassisted. Must be able to distinguish colors as required to discern lightgun signals from the Air Traffic Control Tower. This class specification should not be interpreted as all inclusive.
