A Brief Overview
The Speech Pathologist IV Clinical Specialist is a senior therapist who is fully competent with the duties and competencies of SLP I II and III and has a broad clinical skill set across a variety of patient types ages and diagnoses utilizing and applying innovative and advanced skills and techniques to solve patient care needs in an accurate and efficient manner . The SLP IV/CS addresses language articulation fluency voice and swallow deficits and utilizes augmentative and alternative communications systems when indicated. Conducts clinical and instrumental swallow assessments (video fluoroscopy and flexible endoscopic evaluations) for a wide variety patient populations and diagnoses utilizing and applying innovative and advanced clinical reasoning skills and practice that is evidence based. The Speech Language Pathologist IV functions independently and serves as a content expert population(s)/service line(s). The SLP IV may be granted administrative time to develop new and modified pathways processes and interventions in their focus area(s) including researching any new/proposed initiatives understanding the impact on rehab practices and ensuring rehab staff are aware of educated on and aligned with any new process. The SLP IV uses electronic and face to face communication including Clinical Alerts classroom education sessions and/or arranging for internal/external content experts to provide education to rehab staff to ensure knowledge is obtained by front line staff.

What you will do

  • Employees must abide by all Joint Commission requirements including but not limited to sensitivity to cultural diversity patient care patients rights and ethical treatment safety and security of physical environments emergency management teamwork respect for others participation in ongoing education and training communication and adherence to safety and quality programs sustaining compliance with National Patient Safety Goals and licensure and health screenings.
  • Must meet and be proficient in performing all the essential functions of Speech Language Pathologist I II and III with a more diverse and highly complex patient population as well as the following:
  • Leads patient care conferences communicating with and teaching other care providers.
  • Leads Team or Discipline meetings
  • Makes recommendations for the development of departmental policies and procedures; leads new program development for example by developing treatment protocols for new patient populations.
  • Develops content for clinical teaching including the clinical instruction of interns/students residents and other staff
  • Develops/presents at least 3 professional development activities from the following choices: CEUeligible inservice course state or national poster or presentation and/or lecture at university level program
  • Assists in reevaluating care delivery/programs and completes assignments in the departmental plan to improve services.
  • Participates in research or new program development for example by developing treatment protocols for new patient populations.
  • Is aligned with and fully supports departmental and organizational principles goals and objectives
  • Functions as CI for Speech Language Pathology students/fellows as needed
  • Regular participation as Faculty or Mentor Advanced Training Program
  • Serves as a primary orientation resource as needed
  • Maintains content expertise in focus area interfacing with unit/service line staff and leadership to keep abreast of policy practice protocol and/or equipment changes
  • Assesses the needs of service line/patient population then assesses the educational needs of the staff and serves as a resource in meeting those needs
  • Acts as liaison to the Specialty Unit/Service Line staff to which he/she is assigned
  • Functions as Rehab Departments representative at Specialty Quality Meetings or Process Improvement Initiatives


Education Qualifications

  • Graduate of an approved Speech Language Pathologist curriculum with either a Masters or Doctorate degree. (required)


Experience Qualifications

  • At least four 4 years clinical practice as Speech Language Pathologist (required)
  • At least one 1 approved advanced certification (required)
  • Has lead Department or Interdisciplinary Program/Initiative or Process Improvement Project (required)
  • Successfully completes a Stanford Leadership Development course within the first 12 months of hire/promotion into this classification (required)
  • Completes at least 50 of required annual continuing education hours in area of specialty (required)
  • Member in good standing of American SpeechLanguageHearing Association (required)


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge and adherence to Code of Ethics and performance standards specific to the clinicians professional organization
  • Knowledge of available equipment and vendors used in assigned area
  • Knowledge of basic business aspects of position such as utilization management charging practices and regulatory practice compliance;
  • Knowledge of evaluation and treatment methodologies as applied to routine patient care
  • Knowledge of legal issues affecting the clinical practice
  • Knowledge of pathologies and injuries which result in physical impairments
  • Knowledge of principles methods equipment and theory of the practice of clinical specialty
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing clearly concisely and effectively with patients families coworkers visitors supervisors and other health professionals
  • Ability to develop and document clearly and accurately treatment goals that are realistic measurable appropriate functionally based and that include patient/family input
  • Ability to develop implement and adapt treatment programs
  • Ability to evaluate patients and interpret clinical data and make clinical judgments in clinically complex situations
  • Ability to develop implement and adapt treatment programs to changing clinical status
  • Ability to provide appropriate care and progress treatment based on professional standards of practice and on the needs of the specific individual including age and developmental considerations cultural and psychosocial issues precautions and medical condition
  • Ability to utilize sound clinical reasoning to determine appropriate patient interventions; demonstrates good safety awareness judgment and problem analysis and resolution
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with others
  • Ability to clinically supervise train and evaluate students/interns/residents/fellows
  • Ability to apply advanced clinical skills in treating difficult and complex cases
  • Ability to drive the advancement of care in specialty area through research collaboration with medical teams presentations and continued education activities
  • Ability to translate knowledge into clinical practice
  • Ability to represent the Rehab Department in crossfunctional improvement initiatives


Licenses and Certifications

  • SLP Speech Language Practitioner
  • BLS Basic Life Support


Physical Demands and Work Conditions

Physical Demands

  • Frequent Walking.
  • Frequent (please list each item under Comments). The work involves considerable exertion such as frequent lifting of patients and equipment bending and stooping and walking. The work environment involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions e.g. working with risk of exposure of contagious disease fluoroscopy radiation or infection working with emotionally disturbed patients. Precautions are routine for nearly all situations. The employee might be required to use protective clothing or gear.

Blood Borne Pathogens

  • Category II Tasks that involve NO exposure to blood body fluids or tissues but employment may require performing unplanned Category I tasks

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $64.58 $85.57 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors including but not limited to internal equity experience education specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
