Job Description

Summary: Grand Valley State Universitys Department of English invites applications for a visiting faculty position specializing in American Literature to begin August 6 2025. We are seeking innovative educators who are flexible and able to teach a variety of undergraduate coursework. The position is for one year beginning in August 2025 with the potential for renewal for up to three years.

We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates from underrepresented groups and from candidates who have interest and/or experience in working with diverse student and community populations.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Candidates must have a Ph.D. or be near completion in English or a related field with a focus on American Literature
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching
  • Demonstrated excellence in collegelevel teaching
  • Evidence of independently designed and taught courses
  • ABDs in English or PhD/ABD in Comparative Literature or Ethnic Studies with focus on literary studies also considered. (Please note that due to HLC requirements candidates from nonEnglish fields must be able to demonstrate that they have coursework in literary studies at the MA level at minimum.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will specialize in a broad range of American literature with the ability to teach introductory and upperlevel courses. They may also teach sections of the departments Foundations courses (ENG 215 and 216 our general education Introduction to Literature course (ENG 105 as well as other courses as determined by departmental need and the candidates expertise. The position has a 4/4 teaching load with no service or research requirements. Some support for research/professional development activities may be available depending on department budget.

Courses will be taught in person on our Allendale campus equidistant between Grand Rapids and the West Michigan lakeshore area or very occasionally on our campus in downtown Grand Rapids.

The English Department offers programs of study in English Education Linguistics and Literature. With two study abroad programs in Ghana and the Netherlands faculty in the department demonstrate a commitment to global learning opportunities.
