Job Description

Position Summary

Big Bend Community College (BBCC) a rural college serving vibrant culturally rich communities in the Columbia Basin of Central Washington invites applications for an instructor in the colleges Chemistry Department. This position is responsible to prepare and teach Chemistry courses in accordance with the Master Course Outline and in consultation with a fulltime faculty member.

Essential Job Duties

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare and teach assigned courses in accordance with the Master Course Outline and in consultation with a fulltime faculty member.
  • Utilize best practices for teaching chemistry engaging and motivating students to succeed.
  • Meet the class times as required by the quarterly schedule and assist students as needed with questions related to the course(s) being taught.
  • Utilize Canvas the learning management system at BBCC to provide students access to course materials and the course gradebook.
  • Support students academic success by maintaining regular office hour(s). Refer students to appropriate college resources as needed.
  • Foster a flexible healthy learning environment with respect for student diversity.
  • Maintain positive and effective communications with students.
  • Maintain and submit grades and attendance reports to college personnel when required. Post syllabi quarterly to the Big Bend Portal for each course taught.
  • Maintain student course materials for two 2 quarters beyond the quarter of attendance.
  • Submit assessment data in consultation with a fulltime faculty member in the department.
  • Assist with development selection and/or recommend selection of instructional materials for course(s) being taught.

Minimum & Desirable Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree in chemistry or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Available and willing to teach inperson classes at Big Bend Community College.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to students from diverse academic socioeconomic cultural ability and ethnic backgrounds.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Relevant teaching experience at the postsecondary level within the last 5 years.
  • Experience implementing strategies to improve student success and retention.
  • Experience with online learning hybrid courses learning management systems (LMS) video conferencing and other applications for instructional purposes such as Word PowerPoint/Canva and Excel.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English proficiency.

TEACHING DEMONSTRATION:

Applicants selected for a final interview may be required to give a short (approximately 1015 minute) teaching demonstration.


COMPENSATION:
Associate Faculty receive quarterly contracts. Payment is made on a per credit basis using the structure below:

Step 1 Associate Faculty newly employed by BBCC with less than two 2 years of postsecondary teaching experience and less than twelve 12 credits taught as the instructor of record.

Lecture $862.94/credit
Lab $1403.83/credit

Step 2 Experienced Associate Faculty with more than two 2 years of postsecondary teaching experience and more than twelve 12 credits taught as the instructor of record.

Lecture $880.19/credit
Lab $1431.91/credit

Associate/PartTime Faculty earn sick leave on a prorata basis on inclass hours based upon their percent of fulltime for all parttime faculty contracts with each academic quarter (fall through spring).


The college provides insurance and retirement benefits in accordance with the applicable statues and regulations governing Washington State employee benefits funded through the state and in accordance with the rules and regulations governing the College. The Human Resources Office shall communicate benefit eligibility to all Associate/PartTime faculty.


Retirement savings programs such as tax sheltered annuities deferred compensation and other savings programs are available for eligible employees who apply.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Pursuant to RCW 28B.112.080 applicants must declare whether they are the subject of any substantiated findings of sexual misconduct in any current or former employment or are currently being investigated for or have left a position during an investigation into a violation of any sexual misconduct policy at the applicants current or past employers. By law postsecondary education institutions cannot hire an applicant who does not complete the questions.

Prior to employment a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicants suitability and competence to perform the position.
