Job Description

POSITION: Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) Support Staff

WAGE: Starting at $16.83 per hour DOE

FLSA; EEO; WC: NonExempt; Administrative Support Workers; 8864

LOCATIONS: School sites located in N/NE/SE Portland

STATUS: Hourly/ OnCall without Benefits

PROGRAM(S): SUN Community Schools

SECTOR: School Based (SUN)

REQUIREMENTS: Must pass criminal background check through Oregon

Department of Education.


Position Summary
Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) Community Schools are a schoolbased service delivery model that provides a comprehensive set of services to the school communities we serve. IRCOs SUN Community Schools offer a variety of programs that support the students education and family stability. SUN Support Staff work with the SUN Site Manager to facilitate and run programs like after school classes parent workshops school events food security programs food pantries and more. Programs are inperson located at school sites around outer N/NE/SE Portland.


Essential Functions

  • Be able to follow all school district and IRCO safety protocols related to working with youth in school communities
  • Treat youth and fellow staff respectfully while executing classroom management and adhering to school rules
  • Create develop and implement ageappropriate curriculum for youth
  • enrichment classes. Examples include art sports cooking science music writing etc.
  • Record and report accurate attendance to SUN Manager
  • Encourage and assist youth with homework
  • Provide culturally responsive communication outreach and engagement with students and families
  • Communicate effectively with SUN Site Manager and parents about students success concerns or questions
  • Support at school family nights special events and grade promotion events as needed
  • Be a consistent and reliable staff member during the entire session of extended day/after school programming. Sessions run in eighttotenweek intervals with off weeks inbetween each session
  • Effectively communicate work availability and absences (in advance when possible.
  • Attend all SUN staff meetings and session orientations
  • Effectively work with individuals of diverse backgrounds
  • Understand the role of mandatory reporter and communicate any concerns related to student safety to the SUN Manager in a timely manner
  • Support the Hunger Relief programs at a SUN site in addition to leading extended day classes for students
  • Support and create an open and inclusive pantry environment for the diverse community being served
  • Repeatedly lift and carry up to 40 lbs. for several hours
  • Ability to push/pull carts up to 100 lbs. on ramps and across uneven surfaces
  • Be able to work in outside spaces with minimal protection from weather yearround
  • Familiar with Oregon Food Bank and State of Oregon food handling and safety standards
  • Support with bag packing or food distribution to the classrooms for the Weekend Backpack program

Secondary Functions

  • Ability to develop culturally responsive and respectful relationships with students their families and all community members we serve
  • Ability to use good judgment when working with youth in a school setting
  • Experience working in or delivering services in a school setting
  • Actively work to disrupt racism and systematic oppression through inclusive program practice and implementation
  • Utilize bilingual skills to support culturally specific communication to students families and clients in their preferred language when possible
Requirements

Education & Experience


MINIMUM JOB SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must be able to pass an extensive background check
  • High School degree or equivalent is preferred. Experience in the field may be considered as equivalent
  • Bilingual/bicultural applicants are encouraged to apply
  • Experience working directly with youth in groups of 15 or more is preferred
  • Experience planning and implementing lesson plans for schoolaged youth preferred
  • Experience with classroom management and student behavior management preferred
  • Willingness to complete training on child abuse reporting and classroom management skills annually
  • Enthusiastic attitude and passion for education and/or food security
  • Flexibility in task assignment and schedule is required
  • Familiarity with Outer N/NE/SE Portland communities preferred
  • Reliable transportation and timeliness for shifts is required
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Excellent multitasking skills
  • Sensitivity and ability to relate to people from diverse lifestyles socioeconomic levels and cultures

Knowledge

Education: High School or GED 1

Experience: Less than one year of experience is required 2

Licensure Certification: State of Oregon Food Handlers Card

Computers: All positions at IRCO require use of a computer and experience working with Microsoft Products including but not limited to Microsoft 365 Excel Word Outlook and PowerPoint. In addition the afterschool Sun Support Staff position specifically requires familiarity with virtual meeting platforms like GSuite Zoom Go To Meetings etc.

Impact and Influence: Positions at this level have little to no need or ability to analyze problem or concepts or make decisions on the information. Positions at this level have little or no impact and influence on organization operations programs expense or budgetary outcome

Work Independence: Positions perform routine work with regular supervision and generally are given instructions or written procedures. Positions occasionally encounter variation and are encouraged to suggest ways to respond but cant take final action without approval 2

Planning: Positions at this level have little to no planning responsibility beyond the need to schedule own work and determine impediments to own work schedule. 1

Supervision: Positions at this level are not responsible for any supervisory functions or responsibilities but may occasionally be asked to orient and/or train new employees or volunteers. 1


Working Conditions

Environment: There is a moderately low level of personal risk encountered. Job conditions are occasionally uncomfortable relative to noise temperature inside/outside work dirty conditions or interactions with angry or hostile people 3

Schedule: The work schedule occasionally fluctuates based on organization or customer needs. This fluctuation may occur with or without prior notice. 3
