Chief Financial Officer

The West Virginia Conference of The United Methodist Church seeks an experienced professional with a proven record of leadership for the position of Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This position is responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of the Conference including budget coordination cash and investment management central treasury operations financial reporting and accounting management. The role is also responsible for overseeing the administrative functions including Human Resources and Benefits. The CFO will be instrumental in overseeing financial strategy guiding strategic initiatives and contributing to conferencewide planning efforts in alignment with the Conference mission vision and values.

Primary Roles:

• Performs and implements policies and practices for cash management financial record keeping financial reporting internal financial controls accounting functions and other central treasury responsibilities of the conference assuring professional application of accounting practices of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Oversees the payroll function ensuring accurate and timely processing for conference staff.
• Performs all treasury responsibilities in accordance with the appropriate sections of the most currently approved version of The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church. Receives and disburses in accordance with the actions of the Conference and the provisions of the Book of Discipline remittances from local church treasurers for all duly authorized general jurisdictional annual conference and district causes.
• Prepares and develops the Conference budget in consultation with the Council on Finance and Administration and the Executive Director.
• Communicates financial information effectively to diverse stakeholders to promote financial transparency and ensure the fiscal health of the Conference.
• Seeks continuous improvement of financial and administrative systems and drives growth operating efficiencies revenue maximization expense management cost savings initiatives and alignment of resources to support conference goals objectives and initiatives.
• Analyzes financial information and provides strategic direction and leadership to support the Conferences goals objectives and initiatives.
• Ensures the distribution of accurate and timely monthend and yearend reports for all conference senior staff boards agencies and other related parties as required. Coordinates the preparation and distribution of regular and periodic reports related to funding and cost management inclusive of budget management as appropriate to staff boards and agencies.
• Oversees administrative areas of the Conference office ensuring compliance with the Book of Discipline Conference office polices applicable employment laws regulations and industry standards.
• Provides counsel and guidance to local church treasurers district superintendents financial secretaries and committees on finance.
• Manages and maintains comprehensive property and casualty insurance coverage insurance; advises on risk management and crisis planning.
• Manages and ensures clean annual financial audits.
• Provides oversight of the Human Resources and Benefits functions regarding but not limited to the establishment of Benefit Plans Wespath relationships staffing recruiting and training of conference employees in consultation with the Council on Finance and Administration and Personal Committee.
• Leads and manages staff engaged in accounting administration and IT functions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or related field is required. CPA or advanced degree is preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in a seniorlevel finance or accounting position is required with experience in a nonprofit setting strongly preferred.
• MBA MPA JD CPA or equivalent experience preferred with 501(c)3 notforprofit religious groups is preferred.
• Supervisory experience in accounting or business management is strongly preferred.
• Comprehensive knowledge of nonprofit governance management accounting financial planning and business processes.
• High level of proficiency with MS Office products including Outlook Word Excel and PowerPoint.
• Knowledge of the structure and polity of The United Methodist Church preferred.
• Successful experience with design and implementation of internal controls systems.
• Strong verbal written communication interpersonal and leadership skills.
• Willingness and ability to support the vision mission and critical issues and core values of the Annual Conference
