Job Description

THE DEPARTMENT OF Political Science UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA seeks to appoint either a tenuretrack assistant professor or an associate professor with tenure whose work focuses on the domestic politics of China. Candidates will be expected to engage in research and teaching related to the domestic politics of China participate in the Center for the Study of Contemporary China and promote the study of China at Penn and beyond. The appointment will begin on July 1 2025. A PhD or equivalent degree is expected at the start of the appointment.

Political Science is housed within the School of Arts & Sciences which comprises 28 academic departments the College of Arts and Sciences the Graduate Division and the College of Liberal and Professional Studies. Interdisciplinary research and collaboration are supported by the breadth and depth of academic pursuits at Penn as well as the proximity of resources on our contiguous green urban campus in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. We promote and encourage curiosity intellectual engagement and discovery among all our students and faculty. University School and departmental resources that support faculty include but are not limited to: the Offices of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Vice Provost for Research PennGlobal and Perry World House Wellness at Penn the Center for Teaching and Learning the Penn Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships and Penn Human Resources.

With 35 tenured and tenuretrack faculty over 300 undergraduate student majors and 80 graduate students we are one of the largest departments in the School of Arts and Sciences.

Our faculty teach and conduct research in all the major fields in our discipline including American politics Comparative politics International Relations Political Theory Political Economy and Methods. Our faculty and students study a range of issues with realworld policy implications ranging from civil wars and ethnic conflict to environmental politics partisan polarization and inequality. Our PhD program has an excellent placement record: our graduates go on to jobs in premium research and teaching institutions as well as to successful careers outside academia. The School and the University have attractive research leave and sabbatical arrangements.

The successful Assistant Professor candidates written materials and scholarly productivity will be expected to demonstrate potential for a highimpact research agenda; at the Associate Professor level the successful candidate will be expected to have a substantial prominent portfolio of research. The successful candidate at either rank will be highly proficient in Chinese and will teach three courses per year in English at the undergraduate and graduate levels (a 21 load). They will also provide research advice to students at all levels and engage in service to the department the School and the University.
