Job Description

General Summary:

Develops provides and documents educational services for children hospitalized at Lurie Childrens and returning to community schools. Informs staff of the availability and provision of educational services for inpatients. Acts as a resource for parents on the educational needs of their children and works with parents and the childs school on methods for addressing these needs.

Essential Functions:

Delivery of School Services

Collaborates to coordinate service delivery with families and appropriate team members across the continuum. Makes necessary referrals to the Chicago Board of Education teachers other team members and/or community resources.
Identifies assesses and responds to childs education needs; develops and implements school services for patients based on these needs.
Maintains records of school communications and anecdotals where appropriate.
Consults with families concerning the educational needs of children during and post hospitalization and develops relationships with families that are caring trusting reliable and beneficial.
Works with Family Services staff to support and promote the OnCall Tutoring Program. Oversees the supervision training scheduling and evaluation of volunteer tutors.
When indicated establishes and maintains relationships with administrators and teachers in community schools and agencies to which patients will be returning following hospitalization.
Provides timely and effective intervention for families in emergency/crisis situations.
Educates and trains parents and staff to provide developmental support for children and families.

Team Membership
Communicates with members of the health care team through formal and informal means of transmitting information in order to provide optimal care of patients and families. Communicates through both conveying and responding to pertinent information.
Advocates for and addresses the psychosocial/spiritual/developmental/cultural needs of the child and family throughout the continuum of care.
Participates in the teams group problemsolving and program planning.
Handles difficult situations proactively and collaboratively at the point of service.
Provides leadership for the team in the delivery of family support services.

Professional Skills and Identity
Establishes annual goals and effectively works to meet these goals.
Assumes responsibility for professional development through participation in seminars course work and/or hospital educational programs.
Develops and implements plan for necessary professional credentials and maintenance of such credentials.
Networks with other local and national hospital school programs.
Provides orientation training supervision and feedback to assigned volunteers.
Mentors interns and colleagues as appropriate.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
Administrative and project management duties as assigned.
Maintains appropriate records and statistics.
Orders and maintains materials for service and program needs.

Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients families coworkers and others.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Requires knowledge of child and adolescent education normally acquired through the completion of a baccalaureate or masters degree in special education
State of Illinois Type 10 teaching certification preferred.
Ability to think proactively act creatively and take initiative appropriately.
Ability to communicate effectively work as a member of a team and adapt to the changing health care environment essential.
Spanish language abilities strongly preferred.

Pay Range

$54600.00$89273.60 Salary

At Lurie Childrens we are committed to competitive and fair compensation aligned with market rates and internal equity reflecting individual contributions experience and expertise. The pay range for this job indicates minimum and maximum targets for the position.
