Job Description

Department Overview

The OHSU Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is part of the Department of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and encompasses the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center and Digestive Health Center.

The Hepatology and Liver Transplant Program provides comprehensive multidisciplinary care for a spectrum of liver diseases. In anticipation of future challenges in the field our team is currently developing multidisciplinary programs to diagnose and treat nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The transplant program has a long track record of success with more than 1000 patients transplanted since 1988 and 8090 liver transplants annually.

Function/Duties of Position

The Medical Director of liver transplant provides leadership for OHSU liver transplant program in the division of gastroenterology and hepatology for OHSU. This position is responsible for the collaborative leadership of the program in conjunction with other leaders at OHSU specifically the surgical director of liver transplant. This position is responsible for the growth and improvement of the clinical effort to assess patients for liver transplant and lead the effort in listing appropriate patients for liver transplant.

The duties of this position also include providing patient care in the Hepatology clinic clinic equivalent in the areas of general endoscopy; attending between 8 and 12 weeks each year on the Hepatology consult service; sharing night/weekend call responsibilities with other GI/Hepatology faculty members; and teaching medical students residents and GI fellows during the course of the year.

  • 7 half days of clinic/clinic equivalents during nonattending weeks. The outpatient responsibilities will be at the discretion of the Division Head and can be changed based on divisional needs. The following plan is proposed for:
    • Five half days of Hepatology Clinic 12 Transplant Clinic 34 General Hepatology)
    • Two half days of outpatient endoscopy
  • Attending responsibilities 8 to 12 weeks per year in rotation with other faculty. During attending rotations you will be expected to supervise GI fellows complete all inpatient Hepatology consultations and perform endoscopic procedures on inpatients and complex outpatients at the hospital endoscopy unit or ICU. During the attending rotation you will not have other afternoon outpatient obligations and will receive full credit for these afternoon outpatient clinics.

Required Qualifications

  • 5 years as a practicing Transplant Hepatologist at an accredited Liver Transplant Center(s)
  • Individual must be board certified in Gastroenterology and board eligible or certified in Transplant Hepatology
  • Must have completed a course of advanced training in Transplant Hepatology
  • Unrestricted Oregon medical license or ability to obtain
