Job Description

This is a Contract position: end date is 2 years from start date

The IND Financial Officer will be a senior department administrator responsible for the departments overall financial health and management who receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. The incumbent will provide postgrant/award administration supporting a broad and unique portfolio of funding sources and assist the department with critical transactions and financial reporting. Responsible for managing overall departmental budget processes financial reporting financial administration activities and financial control functions. The incumbent will be relied upon to exercise sound judgment work with minimal supervision apply organizational policies and procedures to address and resolve a variety of financial issues and help faculty and staff advance the INDs research mission. The incumbent will ensure financial activities adhere to University of California and external regulatory policies and guidelines cost accounting principles and standards are met and establish and maintain internal controls and streamlined business processes.
  • This position will provide postaward/grant administration including reviews and approvals for standardized financial data and transactions.
  • This position will apply advanced financial services and accounting concepts to perform highly complex technical analyses develop and implement financial transaction processes and procedures and train/mentor staff on financial activities.
  • This position manages prepares administers and directs control of budget/organization resources.
  • This position manages the activities of the financial/resource analyst staff which may ultimately include supervisory responsibilities (but at least initially will be supported by 23 other existing IND accounting and administrative staff).
  • This position provides guidance to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with established policies and may back up those subordinates who perform specialized tasks or activities.
  • This position reviews and approves recommendations for financial planning and control as well as monitors division and department adherence to approved budgets.
  • As necessary the IND will provide training to the incumbent on UCSF financial systems as well as orientation to IND postaward/grant administration and structure.
  • The position will report to the IND Chief Administrative Officer and to the IND Director.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $144000 $216000 (Annual Rate).

  • Comprehensive knowledge of finance and budget policies practices and systems; budgeting and reporting techniques; fund accounting; human resource planning; accounting and bookkeeping

  • Ability to multitask


    • Minimum of four years of experience preparing and monitoring large budgets and financial management systems
    • Knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources
    • Advanced leadership skills to provide guidance coaching and mentoring to professional and support staff
    • Academic department accounting budgetary financial management and/or transactional work experience
    • Proficiency in the use of UC Path PeopleSoft Financials and other UC / UCSF accounting

    Department Description
    The Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND) at UCSF is pursuing a cuttingedge blend of basic science and clinical neurology to provide outstanding care to those suffering from neurodegeneration. Founded in 1999 the IND is committed to discovering therapeutics that will halt diseases such as Alzheimers Parkinsons and other dementias one of which results from traumatic brain injuries. Its primary offices and laboratories are located at UCSFs Mission Bay campus in San Francisco. The IND is directed by Nobel Laureate Stanley B. Prusiner MD.
