Neighborhood Self Help by Older Persons Project (SHOPP) is a nonprofit social services agency founded in 1980 serving minority older adults throughout the Bronx. SHOPPs mission is based on the philosophy of selfhelp. We believe that older people are capable of helping themselves and helping others improve their capacity to deal with the physical emotional social and financial challenges they face as they age.


SHOPP has several service programs in the Bronx that includes Community Care Network Program; Crime Victims and Elder Abuse Program (VIP); NY Connects of the Bronx; Casa Boricua Innovative Older Adult Center; Leon Guess and Soundview Neighborhood Older Adult Centers; Case Management & Friendly Visiting Program; Caregivers Program and Lafayette Estates NORC Program.


SHOPPs staff must be prepared to utilize the agencys philosophy of selfhelp and mutual assistance to enable participants to gain and express positive psychological and social wellbeing as an outcome of their involvement in SHOPP programs. SHOPP participants are provided with opportunities to: access benefits and entitlements; serve as volunteers; join planning and support groups; take advantage of training programs participate in nutritional educational recreational and health promotion activities; and participate in community service and leadership development.

The Community Care Network Program (CCNP) Assistant Director is responsible for the provision of direct
services development and ongoing management of SHOPPs satellite and the Networks social service
programs and oversight support to the Network. The CCNP Assistant Director will also serve as a backup to
the OACN Director and reports directly to the Program Director. The position requires a masters degree in
social work or related field from an accredited graduate school and experience in group work programming or
a bachelors degree with five years of combined experience in areas of case assistance case management
supervision and groupwork. Knowledge of and experience with older adult communitybased services are also
required as well as clinical experience in counseling. Bilingual skills in Spanish preferred.

The Assistant Director is specifically responsible for the following tasks:
Direct Services:

  • Assist case workers (CCNP & OACN) with screening individual clients for benefits entitlements and
    services to assess need and eligibility.
  • Provide supportive counseling to assist individuals with complex issues who may need additional
    support with their needs.
  • Provide information and referral to other appropriate agencies and identify community resources for
    consultation and referral.
  • Plan schedule and conduct individual and group meetings.
  • Identify recruit train and provide ongoing support to leaders and volunteers;
  • Organize a core SHOPP group at selected sites; serve as a liaison between the leadership the group
    and SHOPP.
  • Work in partnership with the community agencies that support the development of SHOPP supportive
    services at each respective site.
  • Facilitate group planning meetings; assess group strengths and challenges; develop intervention plan
    and implement agreed upon plan.
  • Assist with the development of tailored SHOPP activities and special events in collaboration with
    participants.
  • Maintain complete and wellwritten documentation of case files utilizing the STARS and DYCD
    databases.
  • Develop partnerships and linkages with community groups.
  • Conduct outreach and recruitment of older adults who can participate in SHOPPs CCNP activities.
  • Resolve and/or mediate in potential conflict situations involving center participants.
    • Supervision:
  • Plan organize supervise and evaluate the work of CCNP & OACN Social Service personnel interns
    and volunteers;
  • Assess employee development and provide training in casework techniques and practices;
  • Understand interpret and apply regulations and departmental policies and procedures;
  • Evaluate case problems and provide leadership and consultation to case workers and interns.
  • Plan schedule and conduct individual and group meetings;
  • Prepare and present effective written statistical and oral reports;
  • Conduct supervisory reviews of Case Assistance Tel Reassurance and I&R;
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations;
  • Develop and approve work/ offsite schedules;
    • Administration:
  • Identify and maintain collaborative relationships within the SHOPP network as well as with the Human
    Services network;
  • Develop and implement program presentations for information and referral;
  • Maintain agency records and reports required for documentation and statistical reporting for funding
    sources;
  • Work Collaboratively with SHOPP Older Adult Center Network Program Directors and serve as a
    backup .
  • Contribute to initiatives by developing work plans preparing reports sharing input for proposals and
    communicating performance target outcomes to the Program Director;
  • Develop and participate in monthly Advisory Committee meetings;
  • Assist with public relations and promotion of SHOPP and SHOPP events;
    Complete other duties appropriate to the position as assigned by the Program Director/Chief Program
    Officer.
