Charlotte Beyer Hubbell Chairin RiverCoastal Science and Engineering

The Department of RiverCoastal Science and Engineering at Tulane University invites applications for the newly established Charlotte Beyer Hubbell Chair in RiverCoastal Science and Engineering. We seek a scholar with an outstanding international reputation who will provide senior academic leadership within the Tulane School of Science and Engineering will serve as part of a faculty team that will grow and expand the new and novel Department of RiverCoastal Science and Engineering (RCSE) founded in 2017 and will build upon and enhance the universitys growing interdisciplinary activities in riverdeltaiccoastal research and outreach. By fusing civil environmental and coastal ocean engineering disciplines with elements of the geosciences and ecological sciences the goal of RCSE is to educate a new breed of scientists engineers planners and decisionmakers that can address the complex interdisciplinary problems in rivercoastal systems associated with changing climate sea level rise and the human overprints of the natural landscape. Tulane will award the chair to a prominent senior researcher and educator with a proven record of working on complex interdisciplinary rivercoastal issues and experience and an interest in translating science into action and who can bring a relatively mature research program with them when they come to Tulane. The School of Science and Engineering will dedicate a faculty line at the level of tenured Full Professor. As part of Tulanes commitment to diversify its faculty minorities and women will be given special consideration in the search process.

We particularly seek a broadbased engineer or environmental scientist: fields of interest include (in no particular order) but are not limited to 1 rivercoastal ecohydrology 2 hydraulic and hydrological engineering 3 hydroclimatology 4 hydroinformatics and big data analytics 5 river mechanics 6 coastal geomorphology 7 green infrastructure/watershed management and engineering and 8 softsoil geotechnical engineering. The Hubbell Chair is expected to lead a widely recognized externally funded research program that will attract PhDlevel graduate students and postdoctoral scholars of the highest caliber and will expand RCSEs efforts to develop robust institutional research and training partnerships regionally to globally with other university NGO forprofit and government organizations. Teaching duties are both at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Candidates must have an earned doctorate or terminal degree in a discipline relevant to the department and a strong record of scholarship as evidenced by tenure in their field. Once identified the chair holder will take a leadership role in continuing to attract the highest quality junior faculty in planned searches over the next several years and will also play a key role in expanding RCSEs portfolio of undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
