About

The Transylvania County Sheriffs Office is currently recruiting for the position of PartTime Patrol Deputy. Please note that fulltime positions are most often filled from the parttime staff.

This position performs protective service work enforcing laws patrolling assigned area investigating criminal activity serving civil papers ensuring safety of the public testifying in court maintaining records and files preparing reports and related work as apparent or assigned.

Preemployment Requirements include:

  1. Be of good moral character;
  2. Be a citizens of the United States;
  3. Be at least 21 years old;
  4. Be a high school graduate or the equivalent (GED);
  5. Be able to produce a negative result on a drug screen;
  6. Pass a thorough background investigation including a personal interview
  7. Not possess a prohibitive criminal history
  8. Basic Law Enforcement Training Certification

PostEmployment Training requirements include:

  1. TCSO Field Training Program 336 hours
  2. Annual NC Department of Justice Mandated InService Training 20 to 32 hours
  3. Division of Criminal Information (DCI) training 181 hours

Essential Functions

  • Operates a patrol car to observe for violations of laws suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order; examines premises of unoccupied residences or buildings; detects unusual conditions; maintains surveillance and observation for stolen cars missing persons or suspects.
  • Responds to calls for assistance complaints suspicious activity domestic disputes loud and disruptive behavior; completes calls by determining true nature of the situation and taking whatever legal or persuasive action is warranted.
  • Serves warrants summons subpoenas court orders and makes arrests; prepares reports; testifies in court.
  • Conducts business checks and extra security checks.
  • Performs investigations of crimes; interviews victims and witnesses secures property and evidence and documents facts and incidents searches homes and personal property.
  • Enforces traffic and criminal laws; issues citations for violations; and directs traffic for special events.
  • Transports prisoners and mental patients to facilities throughout the State.
  • Ensures service and arranges transportation for Involuntary Commitments.
  • Responds to inquiries from the public; provides information to and educates the public on law enforcement issues.
  • Acquires outside resources and/or provides law enforcement assistance to outside agencies as necessary.
  • May be assigned collateral duties such as civil process K9 etc. as qualified.
  • Attends Court scheduled Court dates.
  • Represents the Department at community functions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing using hands to finger handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms frequently requires standing walking sitting and tasting or smelling and occasionally requires climbing or balancing stooping kneeling crouching or crawling pushing or pulling lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision distance vision ability to adjust focus depth perception color perception night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts using measuring devices operating machines operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet humid conditions (nonweather) working in high precarious places exposure to fumes or airborne particles exposure to the risk of electrical shock working with explosives exposure to vibration wearing a selfcontained breathing apparatus and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office light traffic).

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of law enforcement methods practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the County and location of important buildings.
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriffs Office.
  • Skill in the use of firearms and the operation of motor vehicles.
  • Skill in physical agility and endurance.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public.
  • Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick effective and reasonable courses of action.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience

Minimum Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or its equivalent or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications:
Basic Law Enforcement Training and Intoxilizer certifications. May be required to possess other specialized law enforcement certifications. Drivers License valid in the State of North Carolina.
