Job Description

As a Mechanical Engineering summer Intern here at Western Digital you will have the opportunity to gain real world handson experiences and contribute to the daily activities required of a Wafer FAB Maintenance Engineering Team member of a Global Organization. Candidate will gain exposure to industry standard Wafer Fab production tools. Candidates will work closely with our team of experienced professionals learning from their expertise and applying your knowledge to daytoday activities and challenges. This internship will provide you with professional development and valuable insights into the industry for your potential future career in Mechanical Engineering.                             

The successful candidate will be able to work with minimal supervision take initiative and collaborate effectively; they will demonstrate a willingness to learn flexibility creative problem solving exemplary communication skills and an ability to think on their feet.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

               Machine Shop

  • Work with Lead Machinist on customer design/build projects
  • Will learn Safety and Quality standards in tool component design prototyping and testing
  • Using SolidWorks experience 3D designs/printing CNC machining and handson fabrication of subassemblies
  • Generate drawings with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Support reverse engineering efforts of components by assisting in measurements data collection and documentation

               Electronics Repair and Calibration Lab

  • Gain knowledge of control systems and/or PLC (Process Logic Control)
  • Understanding of electronics integration into mechanical systems
  • Learn how to calibrate Temp/Humidity sensors for Class 100 Cleanroom
  • Diagnose and repair failed electrical components from Wafer Fab production tools
  • Understand how to read/understand basic electrical schematics
  • Work with Lead Machinist on customer design/build projects
  • Will learn Safety and Quality standards in tool component design prototyping and testing
  • Using SolidWorks experience 3D designs/printing CNC machining and handson fabrication of sub assemblies
  • Generate drawings with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Support reverse engineering efforts of components by assisting in measurements data collection and documentation

               Wafer FAB IT Support/Special Projects

  • Will learn how to backup tool hard drives and also back them up in the cloud
  • Engagement with Maintenance Eng and SW Team on enhanced online Technician Certification process
  • Track and generate weekly progress reports on Maintenance activities
  • Work with Team to Generate and Create KPI (Key Performance Indicator) PowerPoint presentation for the weekly Engineering Status Mtg

               Mechanical Component Shop

  • Remove mechanical components from production tools in a clean room that need servicing/repair
  • Handson rebuild of mechanical components
  • Gain experience of how mechanical assemblies work in HiVac production tools
  • Lean how to leak check HiVac components once servicing/repairs are completed

               Basic Troubleshooting and HandsOn Preventative Maintenance of Production Tools

  • Hands on basic troubleshooting techniques on production tools that have been called down
  • Hands on experience with Maintenance Technicians on tool PMs
  • Observe tools being converted from 6 product to 8 product

               Factory of the Future Maintenance Responsibilities

  • Attend meetings on Predictive Maintenance activities

Qualifications :

REQUIRED

  • Current students seeking a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering or related field with a graduation date between December 2025 and June 2026.
  • Right to work in the US without requiring Western Digital to commence or sponsor an immigration case to employ you at any point in the future required (for example H1B or other employmentbased immigration case)
  • Candidates who will not require relocation to the San Jose CA will be preferred
