Job Description
SAITs Applied Research and Innovation Services department helps partners conceptualize prototype and deliver products to market. ARIS is on the leading edge of novel technology development. As one of Canadas top appliedresearch colleges SAIT has 50000 square feet of specialized research labs facilities and fulltime research staff who are solely dedicated to providing the services organizations need to take their products from concept to prototype.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly organized and detailoriented Research Associate to join the CIRAMM team. In this role you will be responsible for planning and coordinating activities related to ongoing and upcoming applied research projects. Reporting to the research chair you will ensure that project deliverables are met on time within budget and in alignment with industry and academic standards. The Research Associate will serve as a key point of contact between research teams industry partners and other stakeholders ensuring smooth communication and project .
This position requires a combination of strong project management skills a passion for innovation and the ability to adapt to a fastpaced research environment.
The Role
- Mechanical Design & System Development
- Design and develop mechanical components flow circuits and heating/cooling systems for research and industry applications.
- Ensure designs meet functional safety and regulatory requirements optimizing for performance and manufacturability.
- Collaborate with engineers and technicians to integrate mechanical designs into larger systems.
- CAD Modeling & Technical Drawings
- Create detailed CAD models and technical drawings using industrystandard software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
- Generate fabricationready blueprints assembly instructions and BOMs for prototyping and manufacturing.
- Maintain design documentation ensuring version control and accuracy.
- Computational Analysis & Simulation
- Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for structural thermal and fluid flow evaluations using Ansys.
- Conduct Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to analyze fluid behavior in designed systems.
- Interpret simulation results to refine designs and improve system performance.
- Industry Collaboration & Applied Research
- Work closely with industry partners to develop solutions tailored to their manufacturing and operational challenges.
- Support technology transfer by documenting research findings and best practices for commercial implementation.
- Participate in technical meetings providing insights and recommendations based on research outcomes.
- Project Coordination &
- Assist in planning and executing research projects ensuring alignment with project timelines and deliverables.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including researchers technicians and external stakeholders.
- Track project progress prepare reports publications and contribute to funding applications as needed.
Qualifications
- Postsecondary degree with relevant research experience
- Masters or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field with a focus on mechanical design and computer simulation is preferred
- Proven experience in mechanical design and computer simulation
- Proficiency in CFD and FEA simulation is critical and nonnegotiable
Skills Required
- Mechanical Design & Engineering
- Strong knowledge of mechanical system design including flow circuits heating and cooling systems.
- Experience in material selection manufacturing processes and system integration.
- CAD & Technical Drawing
- Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks AutoCAD or similar) for 3D modeling and 2D drafting.
- Ability to create detailed technical drawings BOMs and fabrication documents.
- Computational Analysis & Simulation
- Expertise in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for structural thermal and mechanical performance evaluation.
- Experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for flow simulation and thermal analysis.
- Proficiency in Ansys (Mechanical Fluent or other relevant modules).
- Research & Industry Collaboration
- Ability to translate industry challenges into applied research projects.
- Experience working with industry partners to develop and implement engineering solutions.
- Strong problemsolving skills and ability to adapt designs based on realworld constraints.
- Project Coordination & Documentation
- Experience managing project timelines deliverables and technical documentation.
- Ability to prepare technical reports research summaries and presentations for stakeholders.
- Knowledge of research funding applications and grant writing is an asset.
- Lab Work & Prototyping
- Handson experience with prototyping experimental testing and validating mechanical designs.
- Familiarity with lab equipment and safety protocols for mechanical and thermal system testing.
- General Skills & Soft Skills
- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Track record of writing successful research grants scientific publications and technical reports.
