Job Description

Summary: As part of the payroll team the Payroll Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Payroll Manager to process and review biweekly and semimonthly payrolls. This position ensures compliance with Friend of the Court orders garnishment requirements tax levy laws and various regulations. The role involves specialized and confidential work requiring the ability to interpret and apply University policies federal tax regulations and State labor laws to ensure all payroll processing meets legal requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Process biweekly and semimonthly payroll in Workday HRIS for over 4000 employees including time entry review and adjustments across various employee classifications
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations by processing and maintaining accurate records for tax withholdings child support orders bankruptcy claims garnishments and tax levies
  • Interpret federal and state tax laws to accurately process W2 and W4 forms and provide knowledgeable guidance to employees
  • Calculate and administer salary overpayments and process necessary adjustments
  • Generate custom payroll reports using Workday
  • Implement complex union contract agreements as they relate to payroll
  • Coordinate with the Leaves Specialist on workers compensation claims sick leave administration and shortterm disability payments
  • Process payroll tax forms and direct deposit authorizations with attention to detail and confidentiality
  • Handle the production and distribution of payroll checks including the reissue process for lost or expired checks
  • Submit required new hire reporting to the State of Michigan in a timely manner
  • Deliver exceptional customer service to all employees regarding payroll inquiries and concerns
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Payroll Manager

NonEssential Functions:

  • Provides backup for other payroll team members during vacations.

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum of four years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent grammar and proofreading skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of IRS DOL and Social Security regulations pertaining to payroll
  • Experience with child support orders garnishments and tax levies.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully:
    • Work under pressure and meet deadlines.
    • Maintain positive interpersonal relationships.
    • Use Microsoft Office software including Excel and Word.
    • Provide quality customer service.
    • Maintain satisfactory work performance and attendance records.
    • Work independently and organize own work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Higher education experience.
  • FPC or CPP Designation.

Supervision Received:

Receives minimal supervision from a designated supervisor.Much of the work is selfinitiated.Person is expected to function with considerable independence and apply appropriate policies and procedures within the assigned area of responsibility.
