POSITION REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Locomotives & Rolling Stock
POSITION PURPOSE: The Railcar Technician is responsible for performing the running repairs overhauls maintenance and inspection of our antique passenger and freight railcars. This position performs repairs and maintenance to electrical systems HVAC systems plumbing draft equipment and brake systems to ensure they are fully functional and compliant with company standards. This position may also carry out major shop repairs and overhauls in coordination with the Chief Mechanical Office and Mechanical Shop/Running Repair Shop Superintendent.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Inspect and maintain air brake components including brake cylinders valves and brake linkage.
Troubleshoot and repair braking issues to ensure optimal performance and safety.
Perform regular testing and adjustments as needed to meet safety regulations.
Inspect and maintain suspension and coupling components including spring packs side frames bolsters draft gear and couplers.
Install repair and maintain plumbing systems including water supply and waste disposal systems.
Ensure all plumbing components are functioning correctly including faucets toilets and water heaters.
Conduct routine inspections to identify leaks corrosion or any potential issues.
Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems within railcars including lighting wiring PA and control systems.
Perform electrical diagnostics to troubleshoot and resolve issues in a timely manner.
Ensure all electrical work complies with safety regulations and industry standards.
Inspect repair and maintain heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to ensure passenger comfort.
Diagnose HVAC issues using appropriate tools and techniques.
Conduct preventative maintenance on HVAC systems to prolong their lifespan and efficiency.
Maintain detailed records of repairs inspections and maintenance activities.
Collaborate with other mechanics and maintenance staff to troubleshoot complex issues.
Work in a monthly standby rotation (average 34 days per month) being on call via radio while at work and performing shop tours when scheduled as standby.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent; technical school certificate in a relatable trade is preferred.
Proven experience as a mechanic preferably with a focus on railcars or similar vehicles.
Understanding and ability to troubleshoot basic electrical systems: 120V 240V 480V.
Familiarity with HVAC installation and troubleshooting.
Familiarity with basic plumbing principles and piping installation.
Experience working with high voltage systems.
Capable of operating welding machines oxy/fuel torch rigs plasma cutters angle grinders and other metal fabrication tools at or above a foundational level.
Familiarity with basic machine tools such as band saws and drill presses.
Proficient with the use of hand and power tools.
Willingness to work at heights on ladders scaffolds man lifts or on top of rail mounted equipment.
Excellent problemsolving skills and ability to think outside the box especially in regard to the historical antique significance of our fleet.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Fulltime minimum forty 40 hours per week. Regular shop hours are 7:30am. to 4:00pm. Monday through Friday. Actual shift will have variations due to changing projects priorities standby schedule and shifting train schedules.
Work is both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions during all seasons.
Work requires regular social contact with team members and customers.
Occasional exposure to very hot or very cold temperatures.
Frequent exposure in a shop setting to soot dust oil paint and other potentially hazardous substances.
Occasional work in spaces allowing limited mobility.
Frequent use of mandatory personal protective equipment.
Extended periods of walking standing kneeling.
Occasionally crawling and climbing.
Occasional lifting in excess of 50 pounds.
