Job Description

Position Overview:

The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Teaching Excellence is a key leadership position within KCON responsible for advancing the academic and professional development of both tenuretrack and affiliate faculty members. This role is pivotal in promoting a culture of teaching excellence faculty engagement and welfare and academic achievement. The Associate Dean will oversee faculty affairs including faculty recruitment evaluation and development and will lead initiatives to enhance teaching quality and pedagogical innovation across the College. They will also provide oversight for DEIB initiatives for KCON. This is a 1.0 FTE 12Month appointment with appointment with at least 3 credits of teaching per academic year.

Formal Accountability

Appointed by and reports to the Dean. Is a member of the Deans Executive Team.

Key Responsibilities:

Faculty Affairs Management:

  • Oversee the recruitment appointment onboarding and orientation processes for tenuretrack affiliate and adjunct faculty.
  • Work with Human Resources faculty governance committees to implement policies and procedures related to faculty hiring evaluation and promotion.
  • Oversight and documentation of faculty health compliance (in collaboration with GVSU Health Compliance Director) licensure certification and other requirements as indicated by faculty respective positions.
  • Manage faculty evaluation processes of all faculty in collaboration with the Faculty Affairs Committee including annual reviews tenure and promotion decisions ensuring alignment with College standards and expectations. Maintains records of such for legal reporting and accreditation purposes.
  • Facilitate the process for faculty personnel actions in collaboration with the Faculty Affairs Committee.
  • Collaborate with other Associate Deans and support Program Directors in managing faculty performance developing and monitoring Performance Improvement Plans managing faculty complaints and grievance processes.
  • Oversee and manage facultyrelated matters such as; Time Away FMLA Outside Employment Faculty Qualification Assurance Approvals Phased Retirement Plans Salary Evaluation Process Grad Faculty Applications Intent to Lead Study Abroad Forms Alternate Workload Plans retaining Faculty after retirement and manage the Emeritus Process.
  • Oversee the Sabbatical Review Process in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Research Scholarship and Lifelong Learning including management of sabbatical change requests.
  • Assist as necessary in allocation of reassigned time workload balance
  • Negotiate Contracts and Leaves (joint appointments parental leave FMLA phased retirement reassigned time overload pay emergency teaching contracts)
  • Maintain Records and Review Course Specific Workload Data; assist with monitoring staffing plans.

Teaching Excellence and Faculty Development:

  • Work with the Faculty Teaching and Learning Center as appropriate to design and lead programs and workshops aimed at enhancing teaching effectiveness and pedagogical innovation.
  • Provide individualized support and coaching to faculty members to foster teaching excellence and professional growth.
  • Promote and facilitate the adoption of best practices in teaching learning mentoring and assessment across the curriculum.

Faculty Support and Mentorship:

  • Develop and oversee mentorship programs and assign mentors for new and junior faculty members including tenuretrack affiliate and adjunct faculty.
  • Act as a resource for faculty seeking guidance on academic and professional issues including career development and conflict resolution.
  • Support faculty in balancing teaching research and service responsibilities ensuring a sustainable and rewarding career trajectory.

Program Development and Evaluation:

  • Use data and feedback to assess the effectiveness of faculty development initiatives and teaching programs making recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Will provide collaboration and oversight for the Diversity Equity Inclusion and Belonging (DEOB) initiatives and activities for the College in conjunction with the Coordinator for DEIB.

Committee and Collaborative Work:

  • Serve as a key member of relevant KCON and University committees and as an ex oficio member of the Faculty Affairs Committee.
  • Collaborate with other Associate Deans program directors and other academic leaders to support faculty teaching needs and address challenges.

Strategic Planning and Leadership:

  • Contribute to strategic planning efforts related to faculty affairs and teaching excellence.
  • Stay informed about trends and developments in nursing education and faculty development to ensure the College remains at the forefront of academic excellence.

Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate (PhD DNP EdD or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g. education academic administration nursing etc..
  • A strong record of scholarship and teaching excellence with tenure or eligibility for tenure at GVSU.
  • At least 5 years of experience in higher education with a demonstrated track record in faculty development teaching scholarship service and academic leadership.
  • Proven ability to manage complex faculty affairs including tenure and promotion processes.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build relationships and foster collaboration among diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated excellent pedagogical skills and expertise.
  • Experience in designing and implementing faculty development programs focused on teaching excellence.
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in nursing education and faculty development.


Salary:Minimum starting salary of $138000 commensurate with experience
