Job Description

DMOS is seeking a certified Surgical Tech to work alongside our Spine Surgeons at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and our Ancillary Surgery Center. This role requires experience in orthopedic surgical practices. This position require flexibility in hours.

Essential Duties:

  • In Surgery: Scrub in for surgical cases and assist in the circulating role as needed (frequent)
  • In Surgery: Be available to start work at 6:00 am on some surgery days (frequent)
  • In Surgery: Prepare surgical cases display proficiency with equipment setup and tear down procedures and demonstrate safety standards of aseptic technique (frequent)
  • In Clinic:
    • Greet patients upon arrival check them in and verify or update patient information (continuous)
    • Update patient information in the EMR system including health history current medical information medications allergies (continuous)
    • Prepare injections for physician to use in clinic using the provider recipe (continuous)
    • Prepare patients for physician examination (continuous)
    • Assist staff Physician RN PA with in office procedures such as preparation and set up (continuous)
    • Communicate information such as testing procedures etc. to the patient and family (continuous)
    • Organize and maintain exam rooms (continuous)
    • Assist patients onto exam tables and with other medical equipment (requires lifting)
    • Remove sutures and/or staples (frequent)
    • Assist in procedures done in the office or surgical setting (frequent)
    • Prepare electronic health record notes for follow up patients (frequent)
    • Record new patient data in the HER (frequent)
    • Change wound dressings (frequent)
    • Apply and remove casts as instructed by an authorized provider if within scope of practice (frequent)
    • Venipuncture if within the scope of practice (occasional)
    • Adhere to organizational policies with particular attention to standards of conduct and to confidentiality as it relates to HIPAA.
    • Follow doctors orders or patient need requirements within scope of practice (frequent)
    • Other duties assigned as needed.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Professional level knowledge of the principles and practices of clinic.
  • Working knowledge of orthopedic terminology and application.
  • Ability to work in a busy location and meet necessary deadlines in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with management staff employees practitioners and the general public.
  • Ability to present facts and recommendations in oral and written form.
  • Able to document necessary information using a computer.
  • Must be an organized motivated team orientated individual.
  • Must have excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • General knowledge of office equipment such as a copy machine printer and fax machine.
  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook electronic health records and practice management software preferred but not required.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have a Surgical Technician Certification Maintain a CPR Certification; (May require BLS for ASC or Hospital Practice); Experience in a similar health related industry or clinic is preferred but not required. Experience in Orthopedics is preferred.
