Job Description

The Section of Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine (Yale PCCSM) at Yale School of Medicine (YSM) the Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) Heart and Vascular Center (HVC) Yale New Haven Transplantation Center (YNHTC) are seeking a lung transplant pulmonologistto serve as the inaugural Medical Director of our newly established Lung Transplant Program. The Medical Director will be hired at the Associate Professor or Professor level andwill work with the multidisciplinary leadership of YNHH Yale PCCSM the Division of Cardiac Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at Yale to develop initiate and lead a highly successful lung transplant program at YNHH. Yale PCCSM has outstanding clinical educational and research programs with 70 faculty who are experts in Interstitial Lung Disease Pulmonary Hypertension Cystic Fibrosis Interventional Pulmonology Asthma COPD TB respiratory infections Long Covid Thoracic Oncology Sleep Medicine Critical Care and a growing ECMO program. Yale faculty practice at YNHH a large tertiary referral medical center with over 1400 hospital beds a 60bed medical intensive care unit and the Winchester Center for Lung Disease a stateoftheart facility with 25 patient evaluation rooms dedicated to Yale PCCSM and the Yale Sleep Centers. YNHTC and HVC have established programs in renal liver face and cardiac transplantation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Strategic Planning: The Medical Director will work with the leadership of Cardiothoracic Surgery Yale PCCSM YSM and YNHH on the mission vision goals of the Lung Transplant Program ensuring its alignment with the vision and values of Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital.
  • Clinical Oversight: The Medical Director will be responsible for ensuring that all medical aspects of patient care at the Lung Transplant Program are of the highest quality and that they meet or exceed all regulatory accreditation and quality standards. This includes managing the clinical team establishing and enforcing clinical protocols and monitoring clinical outcomes.
  • Program Development: The Director will oversee the development and implementation of new initiatives and programs to enhance the quality of care provided to patients in the Lung Transplant Program. This includes identifying opportunities for growth and development collaborating with other departments and providers and managing the implementation of new programs.
  • Quality Improvement: The Director will be responsible for ensuring that the Lung Transplant Program meets or exceeds all quality standards including those established by regulatory and accreditation bodies. This includes monitoring quality metrics implementing quality improvement initiatives and ensuring that the program is prepared for any regulatory or accreditation surveys.
  • Research and Education: The Director will be responsible for promoting and supporting research and educational activities related to lung transplantation. This includes collaborating with other departments and providers to facilitate research and educational initiatives managing educational programs for staff and trainees and disseminating research findings to internal and external stakeholders.



Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree

Board certification in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine

Graduate of a fellowship in Transplant Pulmonology (preferred)

Minimum of 5 years of experience in lung transplantation including management experience

Demonstrated leadership strategic planning and organizational skills

Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements related to lung transplantation

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Substantial experience with research and educational initiatives related to lung transplantation as well as scholarly and academic activities
