Job Description

Position Title: Seasonal Junior Botanist & Plant Investigator Instructor

Department: Childrens Education

FLSA Status: Parttime SeasonalNonexempt

Compensation: $22 per hour

Term: June 9August 9 2025

Schedule: MondayFriday; 2235 hours per week


Application Deadline: March 14 2025


Position Description:

This position entails three weeks of intensive training followed by six weeks of fastpaced programming. Program instructors plan and facilitate activities to help students learn about plants do scientific exploration and create art throughout Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG).

Our students are Junior Botanists (new participants entering grades 57 and Plant Investigators (returning participants entering grades 68 scholarship students selected from Title I schools in Brooklyn that have partnered with BBG during the school year through our Project Green Reach outreach program. Each of the two programs has a team of two instructors and both programs work together in the Garden in the morning.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate and work within an inquirybased teamteaching model for gardening activities.
  • Work with coinstructor to prepare and deliver lessons that are multidisciplinary and exploratory with a focus on botanical/environmental science.
  • Plan and lead weekly cooking session.
  • Help maintain garden plots.
  • Work as part of a staff team to colead a threeday overnight camping trip.
  • Perform other related duties or special projects as directed.

Mandatory paid training: TuesdayFriday 9:30 a.m.3:30 p.m. June 10June 27 (no training June 19


Program:
MondayFriday 8 a.m.3:30 p.m. July 1August 8 (no program July 4

Qualifications:

  • Two years experience or studies in education urban agriculture nutrition botany or environmental or biological sciences
  • Experience teaching children ages 913 preferred
  • Gardening experience preferred
  • Experience and comfort working with students peers and supervisors from diverse backgrounds
  • Willingness to work outside in all weather
