REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Treatment Plant Operator Assistant Chief WWS Operations.

Directs and supervises the operation and maintenance of a large wastewater treatment plant. Work involves responsibility for the technical operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant and associated pumping stations. Employees in this class maintain a continuous check on the operating efficiency of their assigned section and develop improved methods and techniques to achieve more economical and efficient plant operation. Supervision is exercised over subordinate plant operators. Work is reviewed by a technical superior through inspections conferences and written reports. Trains plant operators; maintains all records of plant operations and prepares summaries for review by a technical superior.

Requires three 3 years of experience in operation or maintenance of mechanical hydraulic or electrical equipment similar to that utilized in treatment plant operations including six 6 months of lead work/supervisory experience in wastewater treatment field. Must possess and maintain a Florida Class B Plant Operators License in wastewater. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Drivers License class E or higher for duration of appointmen


General Description
Monitors and directs operations of a wastewater treatment plant ensuring the plant is in compliance with regulations.
Works under general supervision independently developing work methods and sequences.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires three 3 years of experience in operation or maintenance of mechanical hydraulic or electrical equipment similar to that utilized in treatment plant operations including six 6 months of lead work/supervisory experience in water or wastewater treatment field.

Special Certifications and Licenses
Must possess and maintain a Florida Class B Plant Operators License in water or wastewater.

Preferences
  • Vocational/Technical School Certification or Associates Degree in Biology Chemistry Engineering Environmental science Water or Wastewater Treatment or a closely related field.
  • Bachelors Degree or higher in Biology Chemistry Engineering Environmental science Water or Wastewater Treatment or a closely related field.
  • Possession of a C B A Florida State Operator license in Water.
  • Possession of C B A Collection certification in Wastewater.
  • Certification in vendor training on operation and maintenance of hydraulic plumbing electrical or instrumentation equipment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Supervises shift operations of a large capacity wastewater treatment plant; trains employees in the operation of the plant and related equipment; supervises and provides training to employees in work methods and procedures; operates all equipment related to water or wastewater plant processes.

Implements work orders and communicates with prior and upcoming shifts; reads blue prints and work orders to accurately determine job instructions and specifications; generates daily maintenance reports on work orders both open and closed and daily report of general plant operations; conducts shift meetings and prioritizes work to be done for the day.

Orders and schedules plant related supplies chemicals and services by tracking the chemical inventory thus ensuring the lab has proper supplies to run tests complete various monthly reports and other tasks.

Performs physical inspection of various pieces of equipment; provides information to maintenance department regarding critical equipment and prepares plant for equipment repairs and failures; maintains equipment and reduces unnecessary maintenance.

Keeps supervisor(s) informed of job progress and material requirements; notifies supervisor(s) of faulty operations and defective materials.

May work overtime including evenings weekends to respond to emergencies and fix unsafe conditions.

Supervises grease sand and rags removal from the aeration basin clarifiers and plant effluent; collects bacteriological samples from the wellfield monthly to ensure safe water.

Performs related work as assigned.

Performs light work that involves walking or standing most of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or skill adeptness and speed in the use of fingers hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office equipment or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals.
