Job Description

Statement of Duties

The Crossing Guard Supervisor will provide oversight supervision and leadership to the School Crossing Guard Unit. The Crossing Guard Supervisor prepares work schedules assigns crossing guards to locations and monitors crossing guard performance. Recommends corrective action and training as necessary to the School Safety Officer. Performs related duties as required.

Essential Functions:

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar related or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Supervise the staffing of City school crossings with a staff of permanent parttime and oncall Crossing Guards. Coordinate daytoday scheduling of crossing guards calling in relief as necessary due to lastminute schedule changes. Serve as relief crossing guard in emergency situations.
  • Provide onthejob training including reviewing evaluating updating preparing and organizing training materials and training sessions to ensure that the staff is knowledgeable of traffic hazards safety precautions and other issues related to their duties.
  • Oversee the management of uniforms and supplies for crossing guards including maintaining accurate inventory records ordering necessary items and ensuring timely distribution to staff members.
  • Prepare budget requests and recommendations related to equipment needs and/or upgrades. Perform other reporting recordkeeping administrative and related work as assigned.
  • Act as a liaison between the Crossing Guards the Police Department the public schools and other City agencies. Investigate complaints from schools and the public through observation and other datagathering activities. Maintain appropriate documentation. Prepare related reports and communications.
  • Monitors the work performance and safety conditions of crossing guards in the field. Document and maintain accurate records of employee conduct. Report inappropriate or dangerous conduct to the School Safety Officer and assist with implementation of any corrective action.
  • Reports safety risks and violations of the law to the appropriate authorities.
  • Collaborate with the Human Resources Department to develop recruitment strategies and support in the hiring of crossing guards to maintain adequate numbers of qualified crossing guards.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential. In absence of School Safety Officer reports to designee

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

High School diploma or equivalency; minimum two years successful work experience in leading teams groups or projects; minimum one years experience as a crossing guard preferred; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge abilities and skills necessary to perform the work.

Special Requirement:

Must possess a valid Massachusetts Class D drivers license and have access to a motor vehicle during all working hours.

Knowledge Abilities and Skills

Knowledge: Knowledge of basic traffic laws and procedures; knowledge of basic pedestrian safety methods techniques and objectives.

Abilities: Ability to represent City to the public in a polite friendly and professional manner; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate and enforce School Safety policies; ability to work with a diverse employee pool ensure consistent crossing practices and modify behavior as needed; ability to discern and react appropriately to emergency or safety situations.

Skills: Excellent communication skills in person and on telephone. Supervisory and leadership skills. Taking initiative teamwork and organizational skills. Strong problemsolving skills.

Work Environment

The work environment consists of being in an office setting as well as outdoors; exposure to outside elements may include rain snow and extreme heat and cold. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting.

Physical and Mental Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the positions essential functions.

Physical Skills

Work principally involves walking standing and sitting for extended periods of time. Essential functions include excellent eye/hand/foot coordination and frequent lifting of objects such as safety equipment (up to 10 lbs.

Motor Skills

Climbing inclines walking squatting and driving are examples of the range of motion required for daily work. Job duties will require fine motor skills for activities such as grasping and moving objects and operating a telephone.

Visual Skills

Visual demands require constantly reading road signs judging distances and sufficient far and near visual acuity to respond appropriately to changing traffic situations. Must be able to prepare review and organize documents and materials.
