  • To plan and deliver high quality EFL teaching to a range of learners and using a variety of methods/channels
  • To fully engage with the Teacher Support Programme through mentoring by Delta qualified Teacher Mentors, and attending INSETTs

About British Council Egypt

The British Council enjoys a strong reputation in Egypt as the leading provider of English language courses. Current performance of Exams and Teaching across the country is strong and there are ambitious growth targets for both businesses. The teaching centres in Egypt have long stood as flagship operations for the British Council and as a hub for the development of teachers and teaching centre managers to staff other centres across the network. There are five centres across Egypt, all comprising a mixture of local and expatriate teachers. The largest centre, Agouza is co-located with the country HQ and has a teaching staff of around 60 whilst Heliopolis has a teaching staff of about 30 teachers; The British Council has recently set up partner premises in two locations. City Stars branch in Nasr City has a teaching staff of 20 teachers and is in a mall. There is also a partner premises in Sheikh Zayed in Nile University and has a staff of 10 teachers. The centre in Alexandria is in Kafr Abdou and has 10 teaching staff. A mix of Adult and Young Learner courses are taught in all branches and all full-time teachers are expected to teach both Adults and Young Learners aspart of their teaching hours.

The Teacher Support Programme (TSP) is the British Council Egypt’s well-established training and mentoring programme for newly qualified teachers. The year-long TSP includes regular input, peer observations, and observations and lesson planning support from an experienced, trained mentor, and the teachers’ have reduced teaching hours for the duration of the TSP. Input and observations are organised around different teaching skills and the programme works to build teachers’ skills, confidence and independence. It is a fast-track professional development programme, with many teachers going on to doing a teaching Diploma soon after completing the TSP and there are now many TSP graduates in management positions around the British Council network

Main Accountabilities:

  • Plan, prepare and deliver up to 20 hours of high-quality English Teaching in the first year.
  • During the second year of the contract after graduation from TSP, teaching hours will be 25 hours per week of high-quality English language teaching that meets the needs of different customer groups taking into account individual learning styles.
  • Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students’ performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy
  • Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials and related services, in order to meet students’ needs by actively working as a member of the teaching team
  • Complete teaching related administrative tasks to specified standards.
  • Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning and maintain British Council’s position at the forefront of best ELT practices.
  • In the initial year of the contract, Teachers on the TSP undertake:

Training Programme

  • Attendance at training sessions and INSETTS as scheduled (up to 2 per week)
  • 2 observations by the training / management team / mentor per term
  • 3 peer observations by teacher on the TSP per term

Meetings

  • Attendance of pre- and post- observation meetings with member of training / management team / mentor
  • Attendance at Training Days and Teachers’ Meetings unless scheduled to teach a British Council courses at that time
