Job Description

Introduction

Are you a skilled automotive mechanic with a strong commitment to maintaining and repairing vehicles We are currently seeking a qualified Police Mechanic to join our team and ensure the optimal performance of our fleet of police vehicles and related equipment. As a Police Mechanic you will play a crucial role in maintaining the safety and reliability of our vehicles supporting our police department in their critical operations. This position is responsible for the performance of skilled tasks in repairing installing and maintaining automotive and related equipment.

40 hour work week; will include evening and weekend shifts to support the 24/7 operational needs of the Police Department.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Repairs and overhauls passenger cars motorcycles trucks and other mechanical equipment.
  • Installs electrical mechanical or communication equipment per manufacturers specifications and instructions.
  • Rebuilds and/or repairs engines transmissions transaxles differential and drive train components.
  • Services steering gear rack and pinion suspension systems fuel delivery and injection systems hydraulic and antilock brakesboth mechanical and selfadjusting types.
  • Performs charging starting and electrical systems diagnosis and testing repairs and service of computerized engine controls utilizing the required scan testing equipment.
  • Services air intake exhaust and emissions control systems and perform Fleet Vehicle Emissions Inspections as required.
  • Services heating cooling and air conditioning systems utilizing the required service equipment.
  • Straightens repairs or replaces auto body parts.
  • Installs police vehicle emergency equipment lighting twoway radios mobile computers GPS restraint systems and graphics.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment as prescribed or instructed including oil change lubrication component inspection brakes and tire service.
  • Performs service repairs and safety checks on motorcycles.
  • Performs acetylene arc and mog welding as required.
  • Operates a tow truck providing road service to fleet vehicles.
  • Snow plowing of police facilities as necessary.
  • Inspects vehicles for mechanical problems following fatal accidents or other police department investigations; prepares a written report and may be required to testify regarding finding in court of law.
  • Performs other related work as required.

EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school or vocational school; and 3 to 5 years of experience at the trade or journey level as an automotive mechanic.

KNOWLEDGE EXPERIENCE SKILLS & ABILITIES

Or any combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge skills and abilities:
  • Knowledge of automotive theory methods materials tools and standard practices of the trade.
  • Knowledge and application of motorcycle repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of automotive testing and service equipment systems.
  • Basic knowledge of automotive body work and refinishing including; panel replacement and fitting paint prep and spraying and light metal welding.
  • Ability to diagnose/troubleshoot and repair various vehicle systems.
  • Ability to understand automotive and equipment schematics/diagrams.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Drivers License for appropriate vehicle operation.
  • Possess air conditioning service certification within one year of hire.
  • Must establish proof of certification by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence in at least one area within one year of hire.
  • Possess own tools consistent with practice within automotive trade.

SALARY BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a General Fund tested position.

This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 424 Unit 128 UPSEU.
