About NAAJA

The North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency is a leading notforprofit organisation that provides legal services and advocacy to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Northern Territory. NAAJAs legal practice provides high quality culturally proficient and accessible advice casework and court advocacy in both criminal and civil law.

NAAJA Throughcare is a suite of traumainformed throughcare programs for justiceaffected Aboriginal people across the Northern Territory. There are throughcare programs for adults youth and women tailored to their different journeys reintegrating with family kin and community. These all contribute to Closing the Gap Outcomes 10 and 11 to reduce the overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the criminal justice system.

The Indigenous Adult Prisoner Throughcare program (the Program) is a voluntary holistic journey of intensive case work and participant support for Indigenous adults whilst incarcerated in prison and as they transition back into the community. The target cohort of program participants have high and complex needs and many are at risk of reoffending.

About the role

The Intensive Case Manager Adult Throughcare will deliver the Programs culturally safe case management and advocacy services as described by the Adult ThroughCare Model for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples 2019. Case management is inclusive of facetoface and intensive case work participant support and collaborative goal setting. Advocacy includes supporting participants to remove barriers that impact on achievement of their goals at an individual or systemic level. This is enhanced by meaningful engagement with family kin and community and supported referral pathways.

The role has no direct reports and will require working within a diverse team. Active participation in supervision processes and peer reflective practice is necessary to buffer the effects of vicarious trauma inherent to the role.

What youll be doing

  • Manage a caseload of up to 15 participants of the Program at any one time.
  • Develop and implement individual case management plan in collaboration with participants consistent with the principles of the Program to attain their identified goals and address their needs and risks in a holistic way..
  • Provide direct support therapeutic interventions education referrals as needed and advocacy to support participants to achieve their goals.
  • Identify and assess potential participants for eligibility and suitability for the program with consideration of their complex and high needs and risk of recidivism.

  • Demonstrated experience providing case management services support and advocacy particularly in relation to Aboriginal people that is culturally safe personcentred and traumainformed.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively sensitively and in a culturally appropriate manner with Aboriginal people their families kin communities and other key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experiences in addressing needs and risks of justiceinvolved Aboriginal people their families kin and communities.
  • Knowledge of the issues affecting justiceinvolved Aboriginal people the families kin and communities and the drivers of the overrepresentation of Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system.
  • Demonstrated commitment to reflective practice to work safely with vulnerable peoples.

Requirements

  • Current drivers licence
  • Ability to obtain a satisfactory working with children clearance (Ochre Card) upon commencement
  • Satisfactory criminal history check and no history of disqualification from employment by a legal practice

Desirable

  • Ability to speak an Aboriginal language.
  • Lived experience in the NTs criminal justice system.
  • Recognised qualification in social work community services criminology or a related discipline.
