Job Description

About The Position 

At KIPP we believe that achieving our mission starts with supporting our students to become strong mathematicians so they can build confidence; develop critical skills understandings and practices that open doors of opportunity. As a Director of Mathematics you will partner closely with regions to create sustaining systems and successfully implement all One KIPP K12 Math initiatives including 100 implementation of Imagine IM Curriculum and driving towards the regional studentcentered goals for students to be able to graduate ready for their postsecondary plans. We believe that regional outcomes are our outcomes! The Director of Mathematics High School reports to the Vice President of STEM and is a member of the K12 Teaching and Learning Team. The Director is responsible for driving improvement in student outcomes with an ongoing increase in proficiency year over year. The Director will support KIPP regions Math and Instructional Leaders to pursue their regional student achievement and instructional goals by building effective regional professional learning and academic systems. The director will do this by engaging in 1:1 checkins facilitating Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and similar community learning spaces working side by side in schools and regions and conducting formal professional development.  

  

Responsibilities 

With the Vice President of STEM the Director of Mathematics High School supports the implementation of our longterm One KIPP K12 mathematics model to meet annual student outcome goals  

Curriculum and Assessment 

  • Maintain and manage the implementation and rollout of a comprehensive APaligned high school curriculum program (Imagine IM/Carnegie) across the KIPP Network. 

  • Support the effective of our One KIPP high school assessment strategy in mathematics including the administration of curriculumembedded assessments universal screeners and diagnostics in applicable grades and college readiness exams e.g. AP ACT SAT etc. 

  • Research and develop instructional coaching tools and resources that support the One KIPP high school curriculum and assessment strategy. 

  • Participate in and support crossteam advisory planning or similar work in support of KIPP Foundation or Network priorities.  

  • Drive yearoveryear improvements in student outcomes on curriculumembedded assessments benchmark assessments and state assessments. 

Professional Development  

  • Support the development of regional and schoolbased academic leaders across KIPP in acquiring the content knowledge necessary to lead the implementation of highquality math curricula at the high school level. 

  • Codesign and cofacilitate monthly professional development sessions for regional and high school academic leaders across the KIPP network. Professional development sessions are rooted in evidencebased practices and include: 

  • Curriculum Design 

  • Instructional Coaching 

  • Rubric Norming 

  • Assist regional leaders with the strategic planning process that follows professional development. 

  • Assist regional leaders to develop effective professional learning cycles from planning and of professional learning experiences monitoring of participant learning and reactions school support and implementation of new learning to impacts on student outcomes. 

Regional Coaching Support 

  • Coach regional academic leaders across KIPP in building the technical and adaptive coaching skills necessary to drive strong curriculum implementation and teacher development over time. 

  • Partner directly with a 3 to 4 regions to build and/or refine their high school math systems (e.g. talent curriculum and assessment coaching) so that they create excellent and equitable experiences for all students.This includes: 

  • Set and monitor student achievement goals 

  • Monitor track and analyze student achievement data to drive content development and support math strategy.  

  • Monitor and improve the quality of instructional coaching and teacher development. 

  • Conduct at least 4 site visits with each partner region to support regional implementation and alignment with the high school math strategy through classroom observations rubric evaluations directtosource professional development planning and facilitation and 68week action planning sessions that focus on both teacher input and student outcome measures. 

  • Lead regular advisory/coaching calls/office hours to support regional partners in developing and executing a program that meets their regional vision and goals in alignment with the KIPP K12 math model e.g. a coaching systems and structures curriculum and assessment implementation supports approach to teacher and leader development etc.


Qualifications :

  • Instructional Expertise in Secondary Math Curricula: Strong math instructional and coaching expertise including deep secondary math content and pedagogical knowledge knowledge of culturally relevant teaching practices and familiarity with current research; Demonstrated track record of results in advancing student outcomes. Knowledge of and skilled in effective professional learning and instructional coaching techniques. Understanding of the differences between teaching that is procedural based and focused on telling versus teaching in which the teacher facilitates student learning through rich tasks and understanding.  

  • Achievement and Outcomes Orientation: Demonstrated record of setting ambitious goals and achieving them with consistency. Invests in developing teammates skills and mindsets to address gaps in achieving team growth; determines what quantitative and qualitative data are most relevant to their goals and supports the team in creating and monitoring systems for collecting reviewing and acting upon data to drive outcomes; able to monitor progress communicating status to the right stakeholders and adjusting plans and use of time to ensure systems are yielding desired outcomes. 

  • Instructional Leadership: Highly skilled and experienced in leading the Internalization and Planning process conducting Observation/Feedback meetings providing realtime feedback leading Weekly Data Meetings setting academic goals and monitoring progress.  

  • Strategic Decision Making and ProblemSolving: Efficiently defines the right metrics to evaluate work and ensures critical team actions decisions and recommendations are driven by data; effectively works with team to resolve issues around data to ensure sound datainformed decisions. Effectively identifies and addresses root causes to the most important problem. 

  • Change Management and Communications: Effectively articulates case for change through clear and compelling presentations and translates this into actional plans. Effectively tailors communications and engagement approach for different audiences to deepen investment and drive actions and behavior change that would lead to orgwide goals; acts as a champion for change with crossteam stakeholders. 

 

 

Experience and Qualifications 

  • Demonstrated track record of student achievement in secondary mathematics in their own teaching through their coaching and across multiple school sites. 

  • Experience leading and managing major complex efforts requiring strong process and project management as well as significant stakeholder engagement and management. 

  • 4 years of math teaching experience. Experience teaching or supporting Illustrative Mathematics preferred.  

  • 2 years of math instructional coaching/curriculum development/program implementation or similar outofclassroom experience. 

  • 2 years of experience math instructional leadership at a district/regional level or similar role supporting across multiple schools 

  • Bachelors degree required

Work Conditions 

  • Travel requirements: Approximately 3040

  • Fulltime Exempt role 

  • Some evening work/travel required

Location 

It is preferred but not mandatory for this role to be based out of a KIPP Foundation office. This role also has the option of working from a remote office fulltime. KIPP Foundation offices are in NYC and Chicago. 

Compensation and Benefits 

In compliance with local law we are disclosing the compensation or a range thereof for roles in locations where legally required. Actual salaries will vary based on several factors including but not limited to external market data internal equity and relevant experience. The salary range for this position is $120000$145000. In addition KIPP Foundation provides a variety of benefits to employees including: 

  • 25 holidays for 18 days additional flexible PTO days (flexible PTO increases to 23 days for years 3 and 4 and to 28 days for years 5.
