Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

We are seeking an exceptional Subject Leader of English to inspire students from Grades 6 to 12. The ideal candidate will be a passionate educator with experience leading an English team and teaching at the High School Diploma, IB Diploma, or A-Level equivalent, with IB DP English Language and Literature (A) experience as an advantage. They will foster a love for literature, adapt the curriculum to diverse student needs, and promote high-quality learning through innovative approaches. About the role

We are looking to appoint a Subject Leader of English to join our amazing team who:

Is an outstanding and passionate practitioner and leader
Has experience in leading and managing within an English team
Has experience in teaching English from Grades 6 to 12
Has experience teaching English at High School Diploma, IB Diploma Level or A Level equivalent level (experience of teaching IB DP English Language and Literature (A) would be advantageous)
Is passionate about teaching and learning with a commitment to continuous improvement
Will be committed to the vision of igniting passion, purpose and potential in our students
Can contribute to the development of the English Department offering creative opportunities to enrich the learning experience of students at THIS
Adapts the curriculum to fit student needs while maintaining overall class progress
Assesses and records student development, while identifying problem areas and areas which need attention and improvement
Has excellent communication skills with students, colleagues, parents, and school leaders
Maintains high levels of behaviour among students, while promoting safety and compliance with school rules and guidelines
Is passionate about learning beyond the curriculum
Leadership and Management
Department Leadership: Lead the English department, overseeing the day-to-day management of teachers, resources, and student learning. Set a vision for the department and ensure it aligns with the school’s goals.
Staff Development: Provide guidance and support to English teachers, organizing professional development opportunities, coaching, and mentoring to ensure teaching practices are continually improving.
Team Collaboration: Foster a collaborative environment within the department, encouraging teamwork, sharing best practices, and supporting colleagues in the planning and delivery of lessons.
Monitoring and Evaluation: Monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and learning in the English department, using a variety of data sources (e.g., lesson observations, student assessments, exam results) to inform improvements.


Desired candidate profile

Leadership and Management: Strong leadership skills, with the ability to inspire, support, and develop staff, managing the English department effectively to meet school goals.
Pedagogical Expertise: A deep understanding of teaching and learning in English, with a proven track record of successful teaching at both the Key Stage 3 and 4/5 levels.
Curriculum Design: Expertise in designing and adapting curricula that engage students, support differentiated learning, and are aligned with national and school standards.
Assessment and Data Analysis: Proficiency in designing and using assessment tools to measure student progress, track achievement, and inform teaching practice.
Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with staff, students, parents, and senior leadership.
ICT Proficiency: Ability to use technology to enhance teaching, learning, and departmental administration, including proficiency with learning management systems, digital resources, and assessment tools.

Passion for English: A genuine passion for English literature and language, with the ability to inspire students and colleagues to appreciate and engage with the subject.
